One of the most common instances is actually not a crack at all, but a center-seam separation. These cracks aren't hard to spot. Most often they're located just behind the bridge on the top, but they can show up in other places. Another defining factor of lack-of-humidity cracks is separation in the guitar's top—as much as 10 to 15 thousandths of an inch. The fix is in. My Guild GAD-25 was cracked (along the top seam from the bridge down to the endpin) from last winter, and I've been trying to get in touch with a friend of mine to fix it. But they're busy, I'm low on cash to begin with, and I don't trust most of the other repairmen in my area. Since this guitar

Lately I have gotten with the program and bought a couple of hygrometers and guitar humidifiers for my acoustic guitars. I'm assuming that an archtop might be as prone to top cracks as much as a flat ... I just drop it into one of the F-holes of my Ibanez SS300 and will keep an eye on it.

Nov 19, 2018. #8. A solid-wood guitar like the SS-300 can indeed crack. However, electric archtops with screwed-on pickups are typically carved thicker than acoustic archtops, partly to reduce feedback and partly to strengthen the top against cracks and other damage. Something, be it volume or tone, will be lost or diminished somehow - especially if it's an open crack. With two cracks in the top, that five-figure guitar was 1) poorly made and 2) cannot

The cause is it's a Taylor. Happens to a lot of them. I think the way the bracing is done it tends to pull the solid spruce top apart. Happened to one I have that was kept in an environment with proper humidity the whole time. This can also happen when they dry out. But I swear it happens more on Taylor guitars. Maybe it's the thickness.

I use parchment paper to avoid glue adhesion. Add diamonds on the lower top crack. Perhaps a backing brace on the upper crack. If the guitar works for you, it's definitely worth doing the repairs. Most here on the forum don't want to hear it, but there are lots of $300 guitars out there that are very good.

The neck blocks are rift sawn. Close to quarter and run kind of like the grain on the top. The grain in the blocks usually run parallel to the quarter sawn sides of guitar.
