If you're not getting any latency issues just 1/8" from your laptop or interface to 1/4" any amp input. There are several MIDI over USB foot controllers out there to switch patches as well. I'm trying to work on theory material: scales and arpeggios over chords amongst other techniques. I like using Ableton because I can quickly change tempo or transpose. I use a Push to change chord types, control tempo, and adjust the transposition. I I really looking for other practice uses that I haven't thought of.
