Turn on v-sync or use megahack to increase cap. Turn off smooth fix, turn on v-sync and make sure you're monitor's fps display is set to 165 (on mine it default set at 60 so it might be the same for yours. If it's a laptop, some of them cap it at 60 fps if it's running on battery power. Smooth fix off.

Blindly tested, yep. But you have to be used to it. If you are used to 120, you can definitely tell between 30-60-120. But you won't notice 200-300. If you are used to 60, you won't notice 50-60 difference but you will notice 10-20. I had the same problem as you when I switched to 165hz screen.
