The Steve Special is my #1 favorite higher gain Dimarzio. That would hands down be my recommendation if you're looking to stick with Dimarzio. I really don't like the Super Distortion personally. Otherwise, I am a diehard Bareknuckle loyalist and they make a ton of different high gain pickups that are all incredible in their own ways.

The DiMarzio forum is a good source of information, but it's definitely not active enough. Don't post there and expect to get a useful response within a day or two. Still, it's an archive of useful information, especially for older models that don't get discussed here much. Sad that DiMarzio hasn't invested in it formally.

I had early 70;s DiMazio SD's in the bridge and PAF in the neck of 3 or 4 of my guitars in the 70's/80's and for playing hard rock it was the perfect combination. I don't know about the newer DiMarzio's, but if you can find some from the 70's I'd say go for it! I thought the pickups matched up nicely in the output department.

There are lot of different DiMarzio pickups that have been labeled B1, B2, N1, N2, etc. Sometimes they were also known by other names, like PAF Pro, but they can also be OEM pickups only available in a given guitar by a given manufacturer. Certainly B and N numbers are on both 6 and 7 string pickups as well.
