The Tune Story. Rated among the finest marches ever written for the pipes, 'The 79th's Farewell to Gibraltar' was one of the early quicksteps written for troops on the march. It was composed by Pipe Major John Macdonald of the 79th Cameron Highlanders in June of 1848 when his regiment left Gibraltar for Canada.

It is sometimes called "the finest pipe march ever written.". He composed it upon the occasion of the regiment's receiving orders to leave "the rock," their post in Gibraltar.

The 79th Regiment was (and still is) known as the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, the only single-battalion regiment in the British army until 1897.
