In this video, I show you two essential exercises for developing your jazz piano skills and technique. Exercise 1 is all about diatonic 7th chords. This is great for improving your ability to see all the possible chords within any given key, as well as your general technique. Exercise 2 is all about shifting between different scales smoothly.

To do this, take the same jazz song as before - but this time play every note loudly ('forte'). Do this five times. Next play through the song with every note played softly ('piano'). Next, practice the 'crescendo' (getting gradually louder over a period time). Break the song into a series of 4 bar crescendos.

The third and final early intermediate jazz improv exercise is an Interval Patterns Exercise. This exercise will familiarize your ears and fingers with melodic interval patterns spanning as small as a 2nd to as wide as a 7th. A good early intermediate target tempo for this exercise is 150 BPM.

It is what I call the "paint by numbers" approach to jazz voicings. Step 1: Identify and mark all the 2-5-1's and/or 2-5's. Step 2: Practice the voicings on the marked 2-5-1's and 2-5's using whatever voice leading seems simplest. Step 3: Voice the rest of the chords, trying to get them to move smoothly to the 2-5-1's.
