In summary, CPM S45VN is a high-quality knife steel that offers an optimal combination of edge retention, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and toughness. It builds upon the older S30V and S35VN steels by incorporating enhancements such as increased amounts of Niobium and Nitrogen, substituting some of the Vanadium and Carbon elements.

Honestly, if you've already got an Inkosi in S35VN, I can't see a practical reason why you'd switch just after new steel is available. If you were planning on purchasing a CRK knife in S35VN now, I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger. This new steel is more incremental in its benefits and not a substantial change over S35VN.

The S45VN datasheet provides a number for CATRA edge retention relative to 440C, which it lists as 143%. This is in comparison with 440C which is 100%, S30V at 145%, and M390/20CV at 180%. However, the datasheet has an asterisk next to the 143% value and says that it is "based upon market feedback.".

S45VN is a new, upgraded version of the popular S35VN knife steel by Crucible Industries. This steel is a high-end martensitic stainless steel that is known for its improved toughness over its predecessor, alongside excellent balance of hardness, edge retention and corrosion resistance. Being a product of Crucible, defined as a premium steel, it tends to be in the higher price range.

The ease of sharpening steel is determined by its hardness. With a hardness of 61-63HRC, CPM S45VN is challenging to sharpen. It will take you more time to effort to get a razor-sharp edge with this steel. The good news is, it holds an edge for a long time, and therefore you will not be required to sharpen it frequently.

The new S45VN steel offers corrosion resistance like never before. I've been a long time user of Chris Reeve Knives and even have my faithful first regular Sebenza in BG42 steel. (Which is still considered an excellent blade material.) Eventually though, CRK introduced S30V steel, which Chris was directly involved in creating.

What are the key characteristics of S45VN steel? S45VN steel exhibits exceptional edge retention, corrosion resistance, toughness, and wear resistance. It is a nitrogen-alloyed stainless steel that delivers improved performance over its predecessor, S35VN. With its fine-grained structure, S45VN offers enhanced sharpenability and edge stability.

CPM 154 Steel has a wider range of achievable hardness at 55-61HRC compared to CPM S45VN with a range of 59-61 HRC. Testing shows that with proper heat treatment, S45VN and CPM 154 can both achieve very high hardness around 63 HRC. The high hardness capabilities of these steels allow knives made from them to better retain a sharp edge.

S110V and S45VN are both exceptional performers in terms of hardness and toughness. S110V exhibits a slightly higher hardness, ranging from 59-62 HRC, compared to S45VN, which falls within the 59-61 HRC range. In terms of toughness, they provide similar performance levels; however, the S110V stands out in this aspect.

Magnacut steel, on the other hand, has a rating of 57-59 HRC. While this is still considered to be a high rating, it is slightly lower than that of S45VN. Edge retention is another important factor to consider when evaluating a high-end knife steel. S45VN has excellent edge retention due to its high hardness rating.

If you are looking for a steel that can stand up to the elements and still hold an edge, S45VN is a great choice. Is S45VN steel good for knives. S45VN steel is a relatively new steel that has been gaining popularity among knife makers and knife enthusiasts. It is a stainless steel that is made by combining CPM S35VN and CPM S30VN.

The true test of a knife's mettle is its performance under real-world conditions. When comparing MagnaCut and S45VN side-by-side, it's clear that both steels excel in different ways. MagnaCut offers a significant advantage in edge retention, making it ideal for users who want maximum sharpness for the longest possible time before needing a

S45VN steel is listed as having a CATRA value of 143% relative to 440C, while S30V steel is listed as 145%. These values suggest that S45VN and S30V have comparable edge retention capabilities, with S30V having a slight edge over S45VN. However, it's important to note that the S45VN datasheet mentions that the CATRA value of 143% is based on

In-Depth Comparison. Edge Retention: CPM-S90V offers far superior edge retention compared to S45VN. So if you are going to need a knife you will touch up once and last a long time, S90V is the better steel. Corrosion Resistance: Generally, S90V will offer slightly better, if not, the same corrosion resistance as S45VN.

According to the specs, toughness is slightly decreased, CPM S45VN has 11lbs on C notch, vs. 12lbs on CPM S35VN steel, but better than 10lbs on earlier CPM S30V steel. Along the same lines, CPM S45VN has slightly better edge retention in CATRA test results (all % numbers relative to AISI 440C steel) when compared to CPM S35VN steel, 143% vs

SUMMARY: CPM 345VN steel is a high alloy stainless steel with outstanding edge retention, increased corrosion resistance, and modest toughness. These properties make S45VN is outstanding blade steel for high-end folding knives. S45VN is a step forward from S35VN in corrosion resistance and edge retention, but lacks some of the toughness of S35VN.

However, S110V contains around 25% more vanadium-rich and niobium-rich carbides than S45VN, which contributes to its exceptional wear resistance. Independent CATRA edge retention testing shows S110V achieving around 170% relative to 440C steel when hardened to 63 HRC. In comparison, S45VN is estimated to have 143% CATRA edge retention at 61 HRC

S30V and S45VN, developed by Crucible Industries, are both excellent and commonly used blade steels. S45VN, an enhancement over S30V, has slightly more Carbon, Chromium, and Niobium, contributing to better hardness, toughness, and corrosion resistance. While both are hard, corrosion-resistant, and retain their edges well, S45VN excels due to

In terms of how they match against each other, S45VN steel has slightly improved edge retention compared to S35VN steel. The improved edge retention of S45VN over S35VN is attributed to the increase in the carbide volume present in the composition of S45VN. S45VN steel has about 1% more chromium carbide volume when compared to S35VN steel.
