It's probably because it hit so close to home but "Black" by Pearl Jam absolutely broke me today. It was the Unplugged version from 1992. I had to step out because I started crying. Not sobbing or anything, but the tears just started falling. The lyrics cut deep. For the first time in my life, I understand what it means to have a song speak to you.

From Pearl Jam's 1992 released album, "Ten," comes a story of this with the song entitled "Black." The lyrics to the song are symbolic and tell the story of how the writer, Eddie Vetter, came to be in the state of mind he was in. Starting out with his "sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay," he felt pure and clean.

As a teen, I was too, obsessed with this damn song. To this day I don't know of many songs that go this deep. As a 30 year old who is a proclaimed Pearl Jam fan, I have never heard the unplugged version of this song. Not once. Until now. I GENUINELY CANNOT UNDERSTAND HOW ANYONE COULD NOT LIKE PEARL JAM. The song is about a sinister heartbreak, personified as an artist whose hard work in the manifestation of the perfect piece from nothing has been 'robbed' from him. Left leaving him empty!! Most misheard Pearl Jam lyrics. Eddie is notorious for mumbling and/or screaming lyrics, so its no surprise that PJs lyrics can be a bit hard to decipher sometimes. The last few albums, we have been blessed with having lyrics to all the songs published in the liner notes, but on the earlier albums we did not have this luxury.

She tried to show him love in return, but it wasn't real. In the first verse, he's saying she was his inspiration, and he's not inspired without her. The canvas and clay are empty.
