I can’t wait for Beyoncé to come out with her experimental deathcore album next.

Although you bring up the Old Town Road incident, this has also already happened with Beyoncé back in 2016 with Daddy Lessons being performed in the CMAs with the Dixie Chicks. Couldn't get more Country than that, and they still said she didn't belong there.

Country stations won't play Beyonce. Meanwhile, alt rock stations are willing to play Imagine Dragons?

Doesn't country radio also refuse to play 'I Remember Everything' by Zach Bryan and Kasey Musgraves. Seems like Country radio just doesn't like playing good music.

I think the double irony here is that Texas Hold Em features Rhiannon Giddens on banjo and fiddle. Giddens is an outstanding artist who - amongst other things (being operatically trained, forming a folk supergroup, winning a Pulizer) consistently has built her career on demonstrating the Black origins of American folk music. The irony here is incredible! Anyway - if you sleep on Giddens - you sleep on everything. If you want to hear more - check out Our Native Daughters, Carolina Chocolate Drops, and her Grammy winning solo album collab with her husband - They're Calling Me Home.

Y’know, you can make a case for Old Town Road as not being country, but it’s not even an argument for her songs. My main criticism for these new tracks is the goddamn whistling on TEXAS HOLD ‘EM.

Beyonce is doing Blues/Americana which has DEEP African American roots. And she's brought some very special heavy hitters, within the genre, along for the ride to E-DU-MUH-CATE the Folk on the history. ;) We know of Rhiannon Giddens, who I've been following for years, who was playing the banjo on the Texas Holdem track. She's also an INCREDIBLE vocalist and all-around phenom talent. Looking forward to March to see what other significant Black players/pioneers she'll be showcasing.

I think Beyonce is a musical genius in so many ways but shes exposing so much about the industry with this trilogy of albums. not only is she discussing how Black artists have been erased and maligned in genres they created. shes also exposing how arbitrary genre lines really are especially for Black artists that can easily move through categories and do it all but often are not allowed to because the powers that be in the industry want to keep Black artists in their "place".

They also proved it when Beyoncé performed Daddy Lessons with The Chicks on the CMAs a few years back. Everyone had some huge problem she was there although Daddy Lessons is another objectively great country song of hers She’s from Texas. Country music originated from black people, then the industry was excluded & left them behind. And people are still saying today Texas Hold ‘Em is somehow not country. What are we doing rn 🙃
