Jump to Connections

In this episode, my guest is Dr. Bonnie Halpern-Felsher, PhD, FSAHM. She is a professor of pediatrics and adolescent medicine and a developmental psychologist at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Halpern-Felsher is a world expert in adolescent decision-making and risk-taking behaviors.

She explains the huge increase in vaping (e-cigarettes) by young people. She explains why vaping nicotine and cannabis is particularly dangerous to the developing brain. We discuss the rise in vaping addiction, the unique social pressures and social media influences faced by youth that make quitting challenging, and interventions to aid them in quitting or reducing use.

We also discuss the role of technology and social media. And, the use of alcohol, nicotine pouches, fentanyl, and other risky behaviors that adolescents face now.

This episode should interest parents, teachers, coaches, teens, and families. It covers the current youth substance use landscape and also covers resources and ways to quit these addictive behaviors.

Huberman, as a 17 year old I have been surrounded by drugs and alcohol and have chosen not to partake. Initially it was fear of the unknown that kept me away but my friends quickly normalized it. Then I found the Huberman lab podcast. I listened to the marijuana and alcohol episodes and took notes. It is true that education is an extremely powerful tool in combatting these behaviors. Thank you for allowing me to educate myself.

Quitting alcohol (including wine as well) and smoking and starting working out was the best solution in my memory, also my chronic depression is fading away slowly but surely. Thank you for your consistent effort, Sir. You personally helped me a lot!

I’m a dancer and I did a private party for a wealthy gentleman’s clubhouse. One of them was a cofounder to a popular nicotine vape company, and he was talking about how he’d never smoke it and finding humor in making millions off of other people’s weaknesses (this was in 2020)

In our household, having difficult and uncomfortable conversations was and is still the norm. My mother was always “up-in-our business” in subtle but non-obtrusive ways. She could effectively read my mood and body language in a matter of seconds when entering a room. Oftentimes, she would lovingly plan a way to get me to open up and talk to her, e.g., a warm chocolate cake with chocolate icing straight from the oven. 🥰My mother would tell me that since we (her children) were a combo of herself and our father, it was her responsibility to understand and guide us through as many generational issues as she could. IMO, it wasn’t just the conversations that kept me out of a lot of trouble, it was watching my parents in action. They are far from perfect but they practiced what they preached. Also, growing up we had one television in the home. We could afford for everyone to have a TV in their room but there was no need since every weekend was filled with activities such as museum visits and trips to the farmers market. I believe those decisions helped balance my relationship with social media and TV. However, I am still working on balancing my love of all things automobile. 😜 Great episode! Keep moving forward, Andrew!

I am a long time listener, first time commenter. Thank you not only for a wonderful podcast, but a great episode. I used this information to start a conversation about vaping and other drug use with my 11-year old. Not only was he interested, but he asked to listen to the podcast, and has done so. This has spurred more open dialogue between us. As a paramedic I see folks lost to addiction every day. Thank you for such a great tool to help me take steps to forearm my son against these pressures.

¡Hola Profe! Such an important episode for any parent of teens. I find that it's not enough to talk about these topics at home. Kids spend more than half of their day at school. But when we discuss a lot of those topics on our "teacher-parents" reunions, every discussion that we are having isn't based around educating our kids about the dangers and consequences of these behaviors, but around "not doing it on the school premises".Thank You for all Your hard work and care for all of us.

Replacing the addiction inpulse with emotional regulation techniques (I use breath work mainly) and making the vapes as hard as possible to access (out of sight out of mind) has been the biggest key for me to quit. All the best for anyone else on the journey.

Not a parent but this is a very important conversation, I've found even a lot of adults (my own friends and family members) have moved onto vaping and yet the risks there for everyone need to be highlighted, thank you so much for this!

This breaks my heart as a mother, and yes as you said Dr Huberman, presumably other optimists out there, I believe if we lose hope, we can't fix or atleast make things better. Thank you for this information. Alot of it was new and some were reminders which encouraged to think and do more for our kids and even adults.
