After learning what my grandfather and father went through in Mormon Boarding schools, my family has dedicated itself to relearning and reclaiming our culture. Growing up I always knew we were indigenous, and I never understood why my family seemed to be so full of contradictions. Your videos have helped me navigate through this journey and I am so thankful for your messages. Youā€™ve answered SO many of my questions, and helped me be confident in my identity. I started out learning to smudge and learning about powwow etiquette, and now Iā€™m making my own daughter her first set of regalia and at 2 years old she can already confidently smudge herself. Youā€™re not only helping individuals, you are helping whole families make generational changes.

Oki Mallory I am amazed with your upbeat manner treating such a sensitive concept as Reconciliation. Here is my Truth regarding Reconciliation. I started my own path in the mid 1990ā€™s by developing a website with the intent of educating non-native people to who and what Native People are all about. This started out very well and I then developed another website and a blog! During this same time period I started weekly public teachings in an attempt to bring understanding of who we are and why we are. While the websites and blog still exist, I have discontinued public teaching simply because my heart cannot deal with Two Spirited people that I seemed to attract. (Iā€™m not referring here to gays at all.) I would teach and people would positively comment on the concepts that I taught in circle and then went home and continued the same life they were living before they saw me teach a different way to approach life. I am a history buff and have studied human nature since before the dark ages. What is common through all the millennia is dishonesty and greed. It seems to never stop and is why I believe that Reconciliation will not succeed. It hurts very much for me to be aware of my disillusionment towards coming to common ground with non-indigenous but we cannot hide the Truth behind Flowers and made-up good intentions. I wondered if it could be called Truth and Healing. Truth itself is not the dark place but the place where Light and Love enter. The deeds, words, treatment, behaviors is the darkness. The Light will heal and bring peace. Forgiveness is part of it and when forgiveness doesnt come quick, it comes in time with healing. This is not to say that the forgiveness means the wrong done is now ok...but just that you turn it over to a higher source/power knowing it will be dealt with. I for one, as Non- Indigenous cannot bear to know anyone is hurt and suffering for so many generations! The video seemed to talk about Reconciliation for Indigenous with Indigenous and Indigenous with Non-Indigenous. Better governing leadership around the world is needed along with improved listening. Miigwetch!

I'm a novice of this process and I feel I'm taking baby steps - attended my first pow wow over the summer and learning about the different dances and symbolism/rituals, reading (from spiritualism to the experiences of a chief who survived a residential school), asking questions (I spoke with an elder about resources to help myself and my workplace learn/understand), and working with my workplace to set up a resource area where colleagues/staff can learn about the history/culture. I'm not Indigenous and I know this process is going to be an uphill battle for everyone involved but I believe that if more people understand, there can be a louder voice - whether it be from protests/demonstrations, stories, or votes.

I really appreciated listening to this video. As an ally who works for Reconciliation in my company, I have run into challenges working with Gatekeepers to the point where I have been crushed. This is the first time I heard the term and it was enlightening to hear. Do you cover this topic more extensively in one of your videos?

Some of the steps in reconciliation do not seem enough for me. It is a positive step but I can understand how some people would struggle with accepting it. Forgiveness shows true strength. I recognize that I hang on to hurt and anger longer than I should and this is something that I'm working on to improve myself.

I am curious as to why the word reconciliation was the word chosen. It makes sense that it would be confusing to want to make things the way they were. Why do I care is simply because I am a human being and do not agree with mistreating of any other humans. It's simple. I think it is important for reconciliation because people need to own their mistakes and do whatever they can to correct them. When my children were small and hurt someone, I did not make them say I'm sorry because those can be empty hollow words and easy to say without meaning it. Instead they were encouraged to ask. What can I do to make you feel better? First step is to own it. Second step is to correct it
