Step inside the Pitch Meeting that led to The Maze Runner!

Subscribe for more Pitch Meetings:    / @pitchmeetings

The past two decades have been jampacked with multiple movie franchises focused on teens stuck in some kind of game-based dystopia where their lives are at risk and everyone is dressed in gray. Along with The Hunger Games and Divergent, The Maze Runner is definitely on the list of the most well-known within that genre.

The Maze Runner definitely raises some questions though. Like did they REALLY try everything to reach the top of those walls? How much time did these people spend naming things? How do they know what grievers are if they only come out in the maze at night, and nobody has survived a night in the maze? Do any questions get answered in this movie?

To answer all these questions, check out the pitch meeting that led to The Maze Runner.

Ryan: "Do these kids just sit around naming things all day???" Also Ryan: Series of videos where guys sit around naming things all day

Still a better design than the maze in Harry Potter, where the spectators apparently stared at hedges and a lake for several hours hoping their kids survive 😂

The reaction he had to all the names they have is so genuine I can't help but relate

I can’t wait for the day that Ryan will say “well actually it’s gonna be pretty difficult, quite the inconvenience”

That "OOooyooOO" somehow exactly captured how these YA writers think teens react to a girl in a movie/novel.

The blank look on Writer Guy’s face after Producer Guy points out obvious plot holes in this movie was….ugh….tight!

I want that “oooOOOooeew” to be a new recurring gag whenever there’s a shoehorned love interest in a movie

"The Continuing" and "yaa" novels... Ryan is really good at naming things.

I think this is the first Pitch Meeting where we get both a 'get all the way off my back' and a 'hey shut up'. AND we got a new 'moving on' catchphrase as well! Very exciting!

I love how aggressive Screen Writer Guy is getting about having Producer Guy get off his back.

I like when Ryan does his Pitch Meeting for the first film in a multiple series. Because you know eventually he’s going to do the rest of the film. By the time he finishes his Maze Runner pitch meetings, there’s probably going to be more movies and a Disney tv series.

I think that a divergent pitch meeting would be tight!

The Continuing actually sounds like an underrated YA novel.

If I remember correctly, there are windows in the maze so you can see the greivers. That’s why nobody has survived in the maze during night, and people still know what happened

For once Writer Guy was pinned down, if only for a very brief moment, until he invented "The continuing". This is very close to being Calvinball - well done RG!!

A cameo from the naming department from Ryan’s other videos would have been tight.

2:45 in the books there's actually an explanation! There's a small window that's hidden away. it's just big enough to see the gievers without them seeing you. Newt takes Thomas to see it sometime in the first two days (it's been a really long time since I read the book, sorry!)
