"Captain! We can't keep up this speed!"
"Why?"
"Well, half the crew are standing behind the sails and they're really blowing really hard. The other half are swimming behind the ship and pushing it really hard. We're all just...really tired."
"DAMN IT! Feed those men some roasted sea monster meat."
"Ah, yes! Food. The best and only way to instantly make people not tired anymore. Great idea, Captain. We're back up to max speed."
"Great, now we'll make it in time to shoot our friends with healing cannonballs."
"Wait, Captain. I see an island with some trees in the distance."
"DAMN IT! We have to go cut those trees down. We're pirates, after all, and pirates cut down trees. Our friends will understand. Prepare my magical, telekinetic, invisible tree cutting tool that I can control from the ship with a mini-game."
"Good idea installing that tool, sir."
"I know. I basically never need to the leave the ship."

This game is a stunning achievement in that they looked at Black Flag and created a game that looks roughly similar but still manages to omit nearly every element that made it a good pirate game to begin with while simultaneously adding in a massive amount of mechanics that aren't even enjoyable in a basic MMO.

When you talk about the ship speed balancing, I think Sea of Thieves has already solved this problem. The max speed for different types of ships are determined by what type of wind they're getting. Like the brig, the mid size ship moves fastest in cross wind compared to the other ships, while the sloop moves the fastest going against the wind compared to the others. It makes it so you can't just pick a direction and go forever, as the wind will change as you move through the map, and gives competent players who understand this mechanic many chances to catch up to people by catching different types of wind.

I've been a huge fan of AC Black Flag and AC Rogue but Skull & Bones looks like it just misses the mark for what people actually would want in a pirate game. Things like fighting enemies during boarding action, jumping off your ship to fight on land when attacking those forts/castles... oh yeah the things you CAN do in the other two games from 10 years ago! WTF Ubisoft have just gone backwards. A hard pass from me which I'm sad about cos I really wanted this game to be awesome!
