I love mods like these, I've been gravel riding for 3 years now with a 52t cassette and 36t chainring, these gears are 100% required for any gravel climb.

as for installing that peg back on to the cage, you should tape it to the screw driver. So this way itll stay attached to the screw driver without needing a 2nd person or keep on falling out.

Using this exact derailleur setup on a 52-36 crank with 11-42 cassette. Works fine, just added 2 links to the standard 11 speed chain

I am running this in 2x on my gravel bike. Rx600 46-30 crankset with a 11sp 11-51T on the rear using the grx 822-sgs derailleur. The 12 spd derailleur works acceptably with 11 spd shifters. The gearing range is amazing when bike packing on steep sections without sacrificing top speed.

Great tutorial. I followed it and put a Shimano Deore CSM5100 11/51 on, after some tuning errors on my part, corrected on the 2nd ride, it works great, I don't notice any noise on the lowest gears. It feels faster/smoother than the stock Sunrace 11/42 though I've only a sample size of 1. Before my 1st ride I did add 2 links to the 116 HG701 I was running while the bike was in the stand as it was making noise in the lowest cogs, it also seemed the top pully had little contact. It did seem to reduce the noise in the stand but that could have been my initial tuning error, or because I was using Hope pully wheels rather than Shimano. Thank you, you've transformed my ride.

Thanks for diving deep on all shimano mullet set ups. Very useful info since this trend is still being discovered by most.

damn dude, that is a slick little mod, glad the parts have some interchangeability still across shimano's lineup.

For over a year ago we successfully built a similar upgrade, "bit" more expensive with Ultegra RX derailleur, Garbaruk cage and pulley wheels. But to further extend the range, we ADDED a GRX front derailleur and a FSA Gossamer pro 2x crankset, 30-46, works just fine. (thus even reducing the q-factor to 151mm and extending only by 3mm the crank length to 155mm for the kid)

Excellent mod! :) Love how you've been doing those recently. Much appreciated :) (Those clutched RD are really way more involved compared to my retro/vintage STX RDs I usually work with :D )

Very detailed and well-organized presentation of a worthwhile kludge for ppl interested in fighting the good fight against the deliberate incompatibility issues Shimano has decided to give its customers for the past decade or so.... Awesome video.

Fantastic idea. My second hand gravel bike came with a Garbaruk setup to get a wide range 11spd. If I were doing it myself, this is a much cheaper way to get the same end result
