"phones in heaven” by Sam Tompkins is about the grief and longing that he feels after losing his father to suicide. He wishes he could talk to him one more time and hear his voice. He also wrote the song for other young people, especially men, who have lost a friend or a loved one prematurely. He hopes to show them that they are not alone and that they can cope with their pain by opening up conversation.
