I just read Tom Morello’s OP “Hard Times in My Hometown” NYTimes Sunday, Jan 9th. His hometown was Marseilles, Illinois. I had no idea the dials of glow- in- the-dark watches caused the young factory workers (mainly girls) horrible cancers. The company did not care about these girls’ lives. Nor did they care about the town’s citizens. The radium used so we could see the time in the dark soaked into the soil, sewer lines and foundations of nearby homes. Thank you, Tom, for using your musical and literary talents to bring this story to light.

I’m a St Louisan and recently learned about this after hearing Tom on XMSirius Lithium. 💔 I was really sad to hear about more Midwestern environmental catastrophe. Thank you for sharing and for bringing awareness. This song has been my anthem lately, it’s playing on repeat in my head. Great jam. I’m planning to visit the memorial of Radium Girls very soon to honor these women.

First, I heard voices in my head
Could never do the things they said
And still, they whisper in the night
Now I've decided, they might be right
Radium girls
Radium girls
Radium girls
Radium girls
Radium girls
Bosses told me, don't worry, young lady
Shut up, sit down, and look pretty
Lick, lick, lick, lick, lick radium
Shut up, sit down, and look pretty
Did you know I was carrying a baby
And now my baby is [?]
Let me choose [?]
To make [?]
There's something wrong, I can see it
Everybody knows, no one's talking about it
Death is glowing in the dark, my bones, they fall apart
These lines of poison paint, they're gonna be my last sentence
Do what you're told
Lick the tips of the paintbrush

Thanks Tom et al. for memorializing these women. As a fellow Illinoisan, I was well aware of the history of the radium girls. Thanks for bringing awareness to this gross injustice. Well done all!
