I met these guys once backstage at a concert in Boulder in the 80s. At that point they were definitely becoming more well known (I mean they were touring and packed Coors arena right?), but I really hadn't heard much of them. My roommate, however, was a huge fan and went and camped out backstage to meet them. Midafternoon he gives me a call and wants me to bring him a cheeseburger, which I reluctantly did (he was an affable freeloader). A bit after I get there, REMs bus pulls up and out jumps the band. I really don't know who is who, but I hung out for a while and watched the stage get set up. And I shot the shit for about an hour with Michael Stipe. I didn't know he was the lead singer until the concert started though. I helped lug a few things around and they gave us passes which was cool. Pretty memorable night! Stipe had a full hair of head back then, lol. Me too.
