Join us as we take a journey through meme history, travel through the different distinct eras of memedom, and find our way back to modern meme times.

The names and specific eras I gave meme history are, of course, up for debate. These eras were compiled through hours of research through common meme eras on the internet and I tried to combine everything into this high-level video. If you disagree or have other thoughts, let me know in the comments.

I’m a Middle School teacher and in my Intro to Multimedia class, we’ve been learning about Multimedia on the Internet. Memes are obviously a big part of that. Today I showed this to recap what we’ve learned and they LOVED it. Thank you for an awesome video!!

I wanna say some time around 2018 or 2019 began a Renaissance period, where memes that were once considered old or dead transitioned into relevancy through some form of familiarity and possibly nostalgia. Doge, trollface, wojaks and the like were all given new meaning and by some miracle carry on with completely different audiences

I believe the future of memes are those like DogeBonk that are self aware kind of meta memes which actively acknowledge their influence from the past while adding something new!

The next meme period started during the last months 2019: The Surreal Period. Memes that lack any context or effort dominate this era, and youtubers such as ShidBot420, and Kracc Bacc begin to gain enormous traction during 2020 and 2021 from the low quality posts. The memes are made up of short clips using random sound effects and images. These memes include amogus, drip cars, the intruder, the rock eyebrow raise, bing chilling and other China-related stuff, 21st century meme sound effects, Mr incredible becoming uncanny and many, many more. These memes are extremely easy to make, hence their popularity and how many of them exist.

i feel like we're already in a new era since 2021. tiktok memes kinda feel like vine memes with less effort. like you can just put on a blanket over your head and act like a girl whilst filming yourself in two different angles. you also don't hear people talk in those videos a lot, rather various trending songs. it's definitely different, oh and not to mention very sporadic. memes like smurf cat or josh hutcherson seem to get really popular and die in a month or so. the only meme format i haven't really seen fall off the mainstream is lolcats which are still exceptionally popular today

I love the execution of this video. It feels like a history book about a time period I have lived through for the most part and you explain it very well. And a Skyrim font and smoke gets my personal chef- gourmet's kiss. 👌

I find it very interesting how these periods have only a few short years to each period. Obviously I think, since a) internet time period follows itself rapidly with each new invention and b) you've divided this period as of 2022-2023. I can imagine that by the year 2050 and memes are still around, this whole period described in this video might by then be summarised as its own 'Beginning Period.'
