For those wondering about the French at the beginning and end, the lyrics are:
Ah! Je sens mon coeur qui froidit! Mon amiā¦
(Ah! I feel my heart grow cold! My belovedā¦)
Trois beaux oiseaux du paradis;
Mon ami, zāil est Ć la guerre.
(Three beautiful birds of paradise;
My beloved is off fighting.)
The words are taken from a piece by Maurice Ravel, about a young woman who learns that her beloved has died (āAh! Je sens mon coeur qui froidit!ā) when three birds of paradise visit her, each one a different colour of the French flag. Interestingly, the plant Lantana is known as āthe Spanish flagā, as it shares its colours, connecting the two sets of lyrics :-)
