Are Mou Rindineddha is a nostalgic song, a lament by someone wandering lost far from home. It talks about freedom in a very poetic way and the flaming yearning to return to our home.
The melody comes from Grecìa Salentina, an area in Southern Italy that speaks Griko, a rare Greek dialect. The area had significant Greek influences, initiated by the ancient Magna Graecia colonization in the 8th century BCE.
The melody is performed by Eleni Eljona Sinjari on vocals, Theodore Koumartzis on a custom ancient lyre masterfully handcrafted by the LUTHIEROS family, and Marios Podaras on the violin.

🇬🇷 🇮🇹 🎶 Lyrics in Griko
(a dialect of Italiot Greek spoken by Griko in Salento and Calabria)

Aremu rindineddha
plea talassa se guaddhi
ce a putt' e ste 'ce ftazzi
ma to kallo cerro

Vasta to petton apsro

Kaimmeno mbro sti talassa

Ma su tipo mu lei

🇬🇧 🎶 Lyrics in English
(loosely translated)

Who knows, little songbird*
From where you’ve flown
Which seas you’ve crossed
To arrive with the fair weather

You have a snowy breast
Jet-black wings
A back that’s blue as the sea
And a long, forked tail

I walk along the shore
And watch you
As you soar and swoop
To skim the waves

But not a word do you say to me
However much I ask you
As you soar and swoop
To skim the waves

* The original lyrics mention the songbird swallow, also known as hirundinidae.

for me from Southitaly it is quite strange. It is one of our folksongs in griko composec by Giuseppe Aprile from a town with the name Calimera. It is a very comon folk song, about the nostalgia of our emigrantes far away from home. It is not a scary song. It is a soft and gentle song about beeing homesick.

Beautifully produced. Captures the sense of "weird" that can arise in the liminal consciousness as we are transported into awareness of another world.
