Jesus said in Matthew 24:34, "Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place". But what exactly was he talking about and which generation did he have in mind?

I believe that Jesus was referring to the generation alive during the time of his ministry, and in this video I give my top 5 reasons for believing so.

For an in-depth discussion of the Olivet Discourse and what Matthew 24:34 is actually about, visit my website at thespiritsearches.com/this-generation-will-not-pas….

Matthew 24 should never be interpreted in isolation from both Mark and Luke. Luke does something beautiful and clarifies the texts which for the most part is structured the same in all 3 gospels. By Luke adding the words "But before these things" (Luke 21:9-13 referring to the wars, and the natural world-wide disasters), first thing in the chronology is the suffering the apostles were to undergo. Second, Israel will be destroyed. Yet Luke does something even more subtle; he says Jerusalem will be trampled until the time of the Gentiles. Look at the news, they testify Israel is still being trampled by gentiles. This shows that "the time of the gentiles" is an undefined period of time which will transpire before world-wide natural disasters take place. Yet again Luke does something beautiful by adding 4 main "keywords" which point to the reference of what Jesus was talking about by writing "Sun, moon, stars, SEAS ROARING" Luke 21:25. The last keyword "SEAS ROARING" becomes the much-needed pointer to show what Jesus was talking about and what he's referencing from the Old Testament when he said, "this generation shall not pass away UNTIL". Jesus was referencing Jeremiah 31:35-36 which if you read the Septuagint LXX, it will show you what's going on in Lukes's mind when interpreting Jesus. Due to the Greek Septuagint's use of the word "γένος" in Jeremiah 31:35-36, it clearly shows this is indeed the passage Jesus was referring too when he said, "this generation shall not pass away until". Let me sum up Lukes's chronology below. 1) First apostle will suffer. Luke 21:9-13. 2) Jerusalem will be destroyed, and Israelites carried to all nations. Luke 21:20-24 3) There will be an undefined time of the gentiles by which Israel will be trampled under. Luke 21:24 4) Then wars and rumors of wars throughout history by which "You" (this means both the apostles and the church, Mark 13:37, John 17:20-21) should be vigilant for but not be alarmed. Luke 21:10 & Luke 21:9 5) Wars and Natural disasters at a worldwide level. Luke 21:10-11, Luke 21:25-28. 6) The sun, moon, stars, seas roaring(tsunamis?) things. Luke 21:25 7) The sign of Jesus returning. Luke 21:27 (At that time during the natural disasters events) These things in 27 are separate events not immediately occurring after temple's destruction due to "the times of the gentiles". Israel will not cease to exist by any other means but by the very condition established by Jeremiah 31:35-36 which is the very thing that will happen when Jesus returns which happens to be the last event during his return. Therefore, as Jeremiah states, Israel will not cease to exist until the natural order ceases, or someone measures the heavens or seas. The second portion of Jeremiah 31:35-36 is fulfilled by Jesus, Ephesians 1:23. Jesus' return means the natural order will be shaken out of order fulfilling the first part of Jeremiah 31:35, therefore "THIS (γενεά) race will not cease to exist until all is fulfilled. Pharisaic Judaism is inseparable from the Israelite race, so Matthew 23:35-36 is still being fulfilled to this day (Just look at the news). Generation (γενεά) in koine Greek can mean either race, faction/kind, or timespan, (γένος can also mean nation, race, kind). The context is what defines the word GENERATION (γενεά), the word Generation (γενεά) does not define the context. Who has been suffering for the last 2000 years? Pharisaic Israelites! All other forms of Judaism disappeared (Essenes, Sadducees, Zealots) But pharisees took a hold of the entire Israelite race after 70AD. Anything beyond the stated above simply is not biblical, because the allusions contained in Isaiah, Ezekiel, Amos, Joel concerning the stars failing didn't get fulfilled because Babylon was neither destroyed nor the rivers that flow through Jerusalem get restored, neither the dead sea. if you read the full body of context in these passages of Ezekiel, Isaiah you'll see how problematic is your interpretation. This is why Apocalypses states there's a nation who is spiritually Babylon, Revelations chap.17, Nation who will get destroyed fulfilling the prophets mentioned above when Jesus returns, and the natural orders are shaken out of place. The γενεά (faction/kind) of the pharisees is what constitutes the Israelite Race (γενεά), for many generations (γενεai). And we will be with the Lord from γενεά to γενεά (eternity). Wherever γενεά to γενεά is used it means eternity. One word in koine Greek has many uses, just as γένος. Look is up below link with full body of texts with biblical quotes. Below you'll be able to read how a word in koine Greek does not define the context, rather the context defines the word. 👇👇👇 https://biblehub.com/greek/genos_1085.htm English does not work like this, as long as you bring your English-speaking mindset to the table, your understanding will be limited by the same. Koine Greek is far more fluid than English with word usage. I speak, Hebrew, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and English. I fully understand the strengths and limitations of the English language. The English language is rigid and nonmalleable with its word usage unlike the other languages I speak. TRUE FACTS! This is a proper translation 👇👇 Yes! I tell you that this people will certainly not pass away before all these things happen. Mattityahu (Mat) 24:34 CJB https://bible.com/bible/1275/mat.24.34.CJB Fulfilling Jeremiah 31:

So glad to see young people teach the truth. I previously was a Dispensationlist, and it almost killed me. I never was exposed to preterism until I sat down and asked God earnestly to make sense of the Book of Revelation to me. Before then, I hated the book, because it never made any sense to me. Neither did Daniel's 70th week, as it was taught to me. God opened my eyes, and since then I now completely understand the entire Bible. I was misled for 35 years until my eyes were opened.

Most excellent teaching. Most pastors haven't got a clue. They are spouting off with futurist nonsense.!!!!!

Rome was not the city guilty of killing the prophets (Rev. 16:6 and 18:24). Rome was not the city that committed adultery (Rev. 19:2) Rome was never in a marriage relationship with God. Rome is not the city where the Lord was slain (Rev. 11:8) Rome was never symbolically called Sodom and Egypt (Rev. 11:8) Only one city fits the descriptions given in Revelation and it is undeniably Jerusalem.

You're right on point. I hold the personal opinion that "meaning is how words are used" not what words are used. This generation reference to the people at that time is correct because we can understand how it answers the apostles' questions about the "when" of the destruction of the temple. First Christ answers saying that it is when the signs happen and to narrow it down, all those signs were going to happen in that generation.

Thank u for what u do, While I can read and I do listen to the audio version of the bible from time to time, sometimes I get lost/dont understand the language of that time. I try to find the meaning and translation of each verse to guide me and my young ones through life, I pray God allows me the opportunity to get myself and kids on the right track and not take things out context or misunderstand the word of Our Lord.

With the chronology posted in my previous comment lets rearrange things. Read below. Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.” “Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?” ("But before these things", rearranged from here). They will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. And so you will bear testimony to me. But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. Everyone will hate you because of me. But not a hair of your head will perish. Stand firm, and you will win life. “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.” Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven. “There will be signs in the SUN, MOON and STARS. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the ROARING and tossing of the SEA. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the HEAVENLY BODIES WILL BE SHAKEN. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”Jeremiah 31:35-36  ‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’ (This is what the Lord says, he who appoints the sun to shine by day, who decrees the moon and stars to shine by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar— the Lord Almighty is his name: “Only if these decrees vanish from my sight,” declares the Lord, “will Israel ever cease being a nation before me.” Jeremiah 31:35‭-‬36 NIV https://bible.com/bible/111/jer.31.35-36.NIV) “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other. He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. “Truly I tell you, this generation(people) will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. This is what the Lord says, he who appoints the sun to shine by day, who decrees the moon and stars to shine by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar— the Lord Almighty is his name: “Only if these decrees vanish from my sight,” declares the Lord, “will Israel ever cease being a nation before me.” Jeremiah 31:35‭-‬36 NIV https://bible.com/bible/111/jer.31.35-36.NIV “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’ ”

It amazes me, that while most dispensational preachers understand that the events foretold to occur in MT 23 and 24 center around, and come to completion, at the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem in 70ad; then have the misguided fortitude to suddenly jump 2000 years into the future when Jesus includes his coming and the gathering right there within the very same texts! And it expressed as being IMMEDIATELY after the events in the previous verses!

As you said this generation is referring to all the people living at that time. But the question no one never asks is, what generation were they living in? The answer to that question is recorded in Matthew chapter one. From Abraham to the coming of Christ were 42 generations. If you were correctly do the math, you will find that this generation. Jesus was referring to was generation 41, Which began at the birth of Jesus Christ. Joseph the husband of Mary was born in generation 40. Is Jesus was born in generation 41. Judgment and desolation came upon generation 41.see Matthew 23:36,38. Which ended Between 37 AD and 40AD. But the greatest thing that happened in generation 41 is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on pentecost.

The scripture in Malachi does not say when that day comes the land will be struck with utter destruction, The scripture says he will send Elijah before the day of Lord “And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.” I’m reading this as he saying if Elijah doesn’t come and turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and their hearts to the fathers he’d utter destroy the land. What does the word “lest” mean and imply here ?

I am still in the process of studying this topic out. Currently i'm at the point where i believe most of Matt. 24 is talking about the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple. However, it is very, very difficult to say that verses 29-31 is speaking of this time. Mat 24:29  Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:  Mat 24:30  And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.  Mat 24:31  And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.  How can this have been fulfilled in this generation? is a partial preterist view maybe a better interpretation to this?

This verse gave me a lot of doubt to be honest. He was 100% refering to the generation that was standing before him.
