Today I’ll take a look at what made Willem Dafoe so great as the Green Goblin in Spider-Man (2002).

Spider-Man is a 2002 superhero movie directed by Sam Reimi, starring Toby Maguire and Willem Dafoe. It was one of the first modern Marvel movies, and Dafoe's performance as The Green Goblin helped set a precedent for many Marvel movie villains to follow. So let's look at how he got the role, and what made his Green Goblin so great.

Who’s you’re favorite Spider-Man baddy, across all the live-action films?

This man was literally one of the best non MCU Marvel villains, got sucked into the MCU, became one of the best villains in the MCU, and just left. What a chad.

Dafoe actually enjoys acting. He has fun BEING these characters. And I don’t see why he shouldn’t.

The fact that this man’s conditions were to return in no way home were “I do my own stunts and fight scenes otherwise the fans won’t believe it was me” He is an actor like no other

I worked on this film doing VFX. On all these shots. Man, what a blast from the past. We had no idea it would be this successful, we laughed at it in dailies. Also...its incredible how high-fidelity the photography is compared to today's Netflix or Hollywood films shot digitally. I was a VFX artist so I would promote digital things, of course...but I realize now film looks incredible.

Hearing about Willem DeFoe basically having to fight for the role—it just makes him as an actor and a person even better, IMHO.

One of the greatest comic book villain portrayals of all time and he seems like he didn’t miss a beat between the 1st SM and No Way Home. And to top it off, to do his own stunts at his age is seriously impressive…

Willem had only one thought in his mind when he knew he had to fight for the role. "Gods don't choose, we take."

as a child, i was absolutely terrified of the green goblin. i was scared of the scene where norman shakes violemtely and breaks out of the chamber. seeing willam dafoe's raw portrayal of the emotions of norman was scarier than the goblins mask itself. every second of norrman was like i was really there, seeing the man. the goblins laugh is still ingrained into my head as something that evokes a primal fear from my childhood.

Willem Dafoe is a beast and he was 100% right he was born for the role he was to Green Goblin what Robert Downey JR was to Tony Stark

Something I feel that Raimi (and Dafoe) understood that the rest of the MCU didn’t is that the villains are horror movie characters. To us and the heroes, it’s a thriller action, but to the in-universe people, these villains are nightmares.

Raimi's outfit designs are simply the best! This version of the Green Goblin was, is, and will always be the definitive version of the villain to me. So much so that whenever I saw a different version of the goblin (especially versions older than the movie one), they looked wrong.

The mirror scene was the first scene I ever saw as a kid where I felt the villain was immensely interesting. My admiration for how he could switch back and forth so quickly and without missing a beat is also what made me realize how a talented actor could really shine

You know you've nailed a character when the following reboots of the franchise don't even want to try to make a different version of your character.

Dude! didn't know that the mirror scene was shot in one take. That shows how good of an actor he is.

That story about the teeth is the best part of this video. And it makes perfect sense, and I can see why the producer wanted that. But the improvisation to leave his natural teeth on, in the mirror scene adds to the viciousness of the goblin, and we don’t even know they did that to the audience. Great work.

Honestly, Sam Raimi’s horror style was the perfect way to bring comic super heroes to their fullest.

It should be worth noting that Defoe continued to insist on doing his own stunts when he reprised his role in no way home.

Now after all the hype settled down and we can come back to No Way Home, I think one of the most brilliant parts of that movie is definitely Willem coming back as the green goblin without the mask, that scene where Peter is just punching him straight in the face and he just laughs like a maniac, that's chilling man, what a performance
