Nobody ever mentions the advantage older players have with maxed crews. I was getting smoked constantly in ASB because my pilot was blacking out matching my opponents turn rate. Now it's much better with higher stats.
I think I have 2 tanks with the same gun, but one crew is new and the reload times are 1.7 seconds slower. That's an enormous advantage.

One thing to note for new players (myself included) DO NOT let yourself fall into the idea that playing the game (actually having a match) is only there for you to earn points towards a new vehicle. The actual match is the gameplay with the added benefit of giving you points. Not the other way around. Getting a new vehicle isn't the game. Playing against other people in a match is. That's the whole point, to fight vehicle to vehicle in realistic battles. Remember that, and the game becomes a lot funner.

A harsh truth is that everything in the game is designed to be predatory and form the bad habits that cause you to hate the game. Gaijin knows the issues but refuses to fix them because they can squeeze you for money. The only reason WT has survived this long is it's monopoly on the realistic vehicle focused shooter space.

I started playing this game mostly just tanks and planes. I noticed that at times it's like plucking off birds with a machine gun, other times I was killed right out of the hole. I think it has a lot to do with how many good players are on at the time, and how long you have been playing. Saturdays and Sundays I have had two to four hour sessions but found after two hours I could not do well at all. I think if they have a high content of players, they start killing you a lot to get you to quit. I find the game very entertaining, and I am 60. But my wife gets extremely mad when I'm on it all day, she says "I'd better not ever hear you talk about kids playing video games again, LOL...

One thing that really made it more fun for me was when I realised I could have more fun in low/mid tier vehicles, not worrying too much about the high tier vehicles I was grinding. Every now and then when I do try out a high tier vehicle I've unlocked, I find I've got the experience to enjoy it more

As a veteran player I have very little to add, other than, and others have also said it, play to have fun in the first place. Advancing in the tech trees comes second.
I've found some vehicles in certain BRs that I enjoy playing and do well enough in that I can complete daily tasks to complete the Battle Pass every season. I also agree with the "burning out" aspect when trying to earn everything. Sometimes I'm tempted to earn a plane and am able to do so, but otherwise I stick to only earning ships, since I basically only play naval, and only occassionally play ground. This way I can keep my sanity and prevent myself from burning out of the game again.

Had a player on our team today who I watched from above as his P-47 was assaulted by three and then four opposing team members for several minutes with him taking dozens of hits yet he took no damage and proceeded to shoot them all down. I wish I could say this was unusual but I've been seeing it more and more often.

My number 1 tip for myself and new players is to not expect to play jets, abrams, etc ever. I've played warthunder for a while but I know that I'll never go above the t-34s with 76mm guns, the short barrel shermans and panzer 4s with the long 75mm. This doesn't even bother me too much, I love those tiers and those vehicles and the grind is bearable at those tiers.

A year later but I wanted to add to this. Another tip: Don't just play American, Russian, and German. Those are the "big three" of the game but some of the most fun I've had playing War Thunder is when I decided to give the Chinese line (yes a lot of copypasta at first), British, and Italian (also quite a bit of pasta at times) tank lines. They all have some interesting tanks that you may discover to be your favorite. I know I had no idea that the British tanks would be my favorite line when I started playing (to be fair, there wasn't even a British tank line when I started)

I just started maybe 2 months ago, and I love war thunder, because I’m a WW2 nerd, and I like playing Sherman’s, and T-34s, tigers, and KV-1s. I’m more of a plane player and I play P-51s, P-47s, P-38s, Bf-109s, FW-190s, Spitfires, Zeros, and more. I’ve started to grind to teir 5, (I have one t5) and it’s fun, since the Korean War is interesting, but honestly I have no desire to play top teir and I think the game is more fun that way.

The core problem in this game is the economy, economy directly influences the grind and a persons capability of progression, which is the main goal in the game. The main reason i hear why people leave and stop playing is because of the grind being so slow and the necessity to spend if you want to actually progress. The problem is further exaggerated when Gaijin keep strangling that economy more and more. I remember a time where a good match in RB would net 80-100k RP and 300k lions. Was that too much? absolutely, but NOW? a good match of 8+ ground anhd air kills and a couple of captures will net you around 15k RP and 100k lions WITH premium. A couple months ago that same match would pull that for a free player, and thats where i would have left it, but nope, Gaijin have their heads so far up their gold plated arseholes that they dont understand that making the grind harder drives people away.

my tips are:
1. dont treat the game as f2p, treat it as a sub game for ~4$ a month, with a free trial till rank 3
2. NEVER buy anything outside of sales, except season pass and Golden Eagles
3. play what mode and vehicles you enjoy, but dont play only to get to a certain vehicle (at least anything later than ww2)
the game is more for people who like combat vehicles in general, if you grind for 100 hours for the one vehicle you love and dont care about the others on the way, the chances are high your vehicle just sucks in the meta or it doesnt perform very well due to other reasons and you feel terrible
4. dont get discouraged when you get stomped in Rank 1 right when you start, sadly a lot of people are noob stomping there with really unfair vehicles (1.0-2.0 BR). matches arin my experience easiest around 2.3 to 4.0 br, so try playing there when you start out

You hit the nail on the head! I'm used to the modern fighter jets, so I'm still learning how to fight with ancient aircraft. I forget often that the older aircraft didn't have the high G-force capabilities of today, and had 3 different styles of fighting. It's amazing how technology progressed over the years. Every game is going to have cheaters at some point, you just have to be good enough to deal with it, and be willing to report the obvious ones like invincibility hacks.
