When I passed my test at age 17, I was given a mk2 Astra for free by my collage tutor. It was a 1.2 4speed banger.
Not long after, I blew the engine and started looking for a replacement.
I went to the scrap yard for some bits and saw a GTE with no engine.
I bought the kit (front and rear bumpers, spoiler, grille, skirts etc) for just £50!!
I then found a crash damaged Astra with a 1.3 engine which I bought for £20 from a friend.
Took the engine out the £20 car and put it in mine then fitted the GTE kit.
Sold the gearbox and some other bits from the donor car and scrapped the shell for £60.
Overall, I made £130.
Gave my mate £50 for all his help.
So I then had a GTE lookalike that ran well and was £10 up from the whole thing 😁
Not bad for a 17 year old 23 years ago!

Prefer the earlier Mk1, it had the classic 80's boxy shape.
All that work, totalling over 20 grand, and it's only worth 15 grand. It goes to show, cars like these are a labour of love and will never make a profit.
Yet a Mk1 Escort RS which you could have bought for peanuts a few years ago, can be worth 50 to 60 grand for a concourse example.

An old work mate had a 2.0 16v GTE in a deep metallic red / maroon colour, full black leather mint condition lovely car in the late 1990s, I remember seeing 135mph on the digital dash during one spirited lunch time drive to the pub, unfortunately he smashed it into someone and it went in for repair. Strangely within a week of it coming back from repair it disappeared from his drive way overnight even with some top security never to be seen again. He picked up a 205 GTI as a replacement but that was miles beneath the GTE.

Summer 1986. Dad bought a brand new jet black GTE. Electronic dash, 100mph+ black, I felt like Knight Rider sat in it. First car I was ever in going over 100mph. Great car.
