i had a neighbour, an old man that ended up being a family friend, he was lonely but he was always smiling along with his dog. he would always greet me when he left for work on his truck, until suddenly he passed away one night. I played this song when i got the news and now every time i listen to it i remember him, i remember how lovely yet lonely he was, mr benitez i hope you know you were loved.

Are we to speak, first day of the week
Stumbling words at the bar
Beauty blue eyes, my order of fries
Long island kindness and wine
Beloved of John, I get it all wrong
I read you for some kind of poem
Covered in lines, the fossils I find
Have they no life of their own?
So can we pretend sweetly
Before the mystery ends?
I am a man with a heart that offends
With its lonely and greedy demands
There's only a shadow of me, in a manner of speaking I'm dead
Such a waste, your beautiful face
Stumbling carpet arise
Go follow your gem, your white feathered friend
Icarus, point to the sun
If history speaks of two baby teeth
I'm painting the hills blue and red
They said beware, Lord hear my prayer
I've wasted my throes on your head
So can we be friends sweetly
Before the mystery ends?
I love you more than the world can contain
In its lonely and ramshackle head
There's only a shadow of me, in a manner of speaking I'm dead
I'm holding my breath
My tongue on your chest
What can be said of my heart?
If history speaks, the kiss on my cheek
Where there remains but a mark
Beloved my John, so I'll carry on
Counting my cards down to one
And when I am dead, come visit my bed
My fossil is bright in the sun
So can we contend, peacefully
Before my history ends?
Jesus I need you, be near me, come shield me
From fossils that fall on my head
There's only a shadow of me, in a matter of speaking I'm dead

Honestly when I listen to Sufjan Stevens. I can't handle it. It's just too much, man. This, Modest Mouse (circa 2000 and before), Neutral Milk Hotel, Bon Iver, David Bowie, Bob Dylan. Man there's just so much music that I just can't handle but I'm only drawn to it. I can't listen to anything else. I'm practically in tears to the point of weeping almost every time I hear it. It's so fucking beautiful. It's so painful. It's so daunting. The fact that people can make music like this appreciates humanity as a whole. It's just beautiful how we can connect to others on this planet. I'm so thankful for that. Because sometimes I just don't feel like I have people in every day life that I can connect with like I can with the pain that comes from art.

The confounding words of this song are all of the "you's" and "my's." If the third stanza were taken literally, it would actually be Jesus talking, as his was the cheek that was kissed by Judas. The earlier line "Beloved OF John, I get all wrong" is somehow resolved here, as (Jesus, as I am presuming) speaks John's true identity; Beloved MY John. John is securely his, and with that knowledge Jesus carries on until the day of his death (so I'll carry on, counting my cards down to one). Christ's fossil though--his memory, the way he will be remembered and thought about--is bright in the sun, which is the great physical sustainer of life and the greatest symbol of life that we have. Without it, there would be no life. The fossils from before, the memories of other lovers, perhaps, do not have life at all ("covered in lines, the fossils I find--have they no life of their own?").
The song contrasts Stevens' human lovers, his love for his mother (second stanza), and the love of Jesus. These musings inspire the last three lines: Jesus, I need you; shield me from my ugly, painful, death-filled history with YOUR history, which is indeed resurrection and life out of death. This is why, though the phrase is colloquially "manner of speaking," he actually sings "matter of speaking." If it's a manner of speaking, then he is absolutely dead; the phrase implies that what he speaks is the truth, expressed in a certain way but true nonetheless. If it's a matter of speaking, then he is absolutely dead in that matter. If he is the one who speaks, then he is dead. But there is another matter--the matter of Christ himself, who has spoken and called John his beloved. On a more grandiose and cosmic level, in John 1 we read that Christ is the Word itself and the source of life, through whom all things were made and without whom nothing would exist, much like the sun. Because of this matter, Stevens is not dead at all.
