OSCAR WINNER:Best PictureBest DirectorBest Actor - Fredric MarchBest Supporting Actor - Harold RussellBest ScreenplayBest EditingBest ScoreIt's the hope that sustains the spirit of every GI: the dream of the day when he will finally return home. For three WWII veterans, the day has arrived. But for each man, the dream is about to become a nightmare. Captain Fred Derry (Dana Andrews) is returning to a loveless marriage; Sergeant Al Stephenson (Fredric March) is a stranger to a family that's grown up without him; and young sailor Homer Parrish (Harold Russell) is tormented by the loss of his hands. Can these three men find the courage to rebuild their world? Or are the best years of their lives a thing of the past? Featuring a brilliant cast that includes Myrna Loy and Virginia Mayo, The Best Years of Our Lives garnered seven Oscars, including "Best Picture." Heart-wrenching, touching and "filled with emotional dynamite" (The Hollywood Reporter), it remains "one of the best films about war veterans ever made" (American Movie Classics).

Saw this for the first time at 66 years old. I was afraid to watch it. Cried like a baby. The Greatest Generation indeed!!!

I'm only 18, but I finally decided to watch the movie after being peeked with interest on American generations. Must say as someone who comes from Generation Z, seeing a glimpse of how the world used to be is fascinating. I truly have gained so much respect for those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

Arguably one of the most important films ever produced by Hollywood. I saw it the 1st time on TMC in 1992, and it made a lasting impression on me. My mom's second husband was a paraplegic veteran of ww2, and at 15 years old, I had to help him do things like upkeep on the house and cars. I learned a lot in those years. I recall hauling him up stairs before ramps and other handicapped accommodations were available

This is how I recall my youth after World War II - the neighborhoods, the people, the determination to live the lives we were intended from birth.Ā  Harold Russell (Homer) deserved the two Academy Awards presented him in the months following this films release.Ā  Harold was more than a supporting character, he was the face of those returning from the most anxious period in contemporary American and, indeed, world history.Ā  He was not trained as an actor, per se.Ā  After his accident loading munitions for an Airborne unit, part of his recovery was to demonstrate to others and to the public that amputees and others whose lives seemed impossible could in fact become again an important part of society.Ā  When the producers of "The Best Years of Our Lives" saw Harold they immediately knew they found Harold.Ā  Perhaps the finest film of its genre and at a time in need of healing, this was the impression America wanted to remember over that which that had to face daily for more than four years.Ā  Harold Russell is gone now, but his image and his message remains for - hopefully - eternity.

One of the best films ever made! This is only one of many touching scenes. The non-professional actor Harold Russell as Homer did a fantastic job in this film and won an Academy Award for his performance.
