'My Tattoos Serve as Physical, Emotional and Spiritual Armor' Brad | Heavily Inked

Brad Carpenter is living proof that the old clichƩ "the best things in life are worth the wait" may actually be true. Despite admiring the ink of others for decades, Brad didn't get his first tattoo until he was 52 years old. It took him that long to fully understand what he wanted in order to create the perfect spiritual armor that he wears today. On this episode of Heavily Inked, we spoke with Brad about the bond he has formed with his artist over the years, how his tattoos make him feel secure in his self and much more.

These tattoos are not something I would personally get but his tattoos look 100x better than most of the people featured on this series. These designs were meant for the body. There's thought put into this.

That's how I feel about my tattoos. My entire life I had it pounded in me that I'm fat, ugly, and that no one will want me. I'm 23, but at 21 I started getting tattoos. I'm by no means heavily covered but the tiny crystal ball my best friend did as my first tattoo made me feel amazing. It's not great but it's my favorite because it helped start making me feel beautiful for the first time in my life. Now I have 9 more and I feel so beautiful and it has so much meaning.

I feel they're great for him! I only have 7 and started getting tats when I turned 55. I'm now 75 and still love mine, could use 1 or 2 more!

Smart move, sir. I got my first tattoo age 16 ( I wanted that image since age 12). But then I had no image or style in mind. So I waited 30 years before I got my full sleeve just last year.

I absolutely love Brad's story! And I can definitely identify with his journey. I took years to design my back piece and had it done in stages between the age of 30 and 45. Now, 10 years later, I'm planning my next piece. But who knows how long it will take me to actually get it done. Tattooing is a lifelong journey!

Growing up I always envisioned my adult self covered in tattoos, I dont know why, I grew up in an extremely religious home and ended up running away from the cult at 20 and part my journey to self actualization is absolutely tied to my tattoos. I get to decorate my body my way for myself and it does feel like armor it does feel sacred.

Good for you Brad. Iā€™m sorry for all of your losses. Your ink suits you perfectly. My tattoos have been my therapy. With each session I let out a little buried grief, trauma pain and pent up anger. I get just as much out of it as traditional ā€˜therapyā€™ but with the added bonus of having beautiful art on my skin for life.

His bodysuit is stunning and his story is so important. I really admire that he didn't get any tattoos in his youth and then got a massive cohesive bodysuit starting in his 50s, when he knew himself and had a vision for an entire work.
