How’s this for a modern-day origin story? David Burke was enjoying a burgeoning career as a Fortnite streamer when the YouTube copyright police struck. Turns out you can’t use someone else’s music for your compilations of Battle Royale wins. The genius workaround? Make his own music. The idea came from the Houston native’s mom, who knew he could do it considering his wildly creative personality, which included an enduring interest in writing poetry. Soon enough, friends and fans were just as interested in David’s music as they were his Fortnite island adventures. “Lyrics come first for me, rather than melody,” the “Romantic Homicide” singer told us. Cribbing inspiration from the Arctic Monkeys and Paramore’s Haley Williams among other alt-rock titans, Burke recorded tracks in his sister’s bedroom closet. Those songs are part of a catalogue that now draws more than 30 million monthly listeners on Spotify. As laidback as the 18-year-old was in our studio, it’s clear we’re catching d4vd during a massive life shift. Remember, this is a guy who didn’t play shows until a year ago.
