NO LAUGHING MATTER. Shane Dawson, the internet star whose irreverent humor captured the zeitgeist of a generation, took an unexpected detour into the realm of horror with his starring role in the 2012 cult film "Smiley." This psychological thriller blended online urban legends with slasher tropes, bringing the internet's dark underbelly to shocking life on the big screen.

In this deep-dive analysis, I will trace Smiley's origins, examining how the film wove together cyber lore and horror to create a reflection of the internet's creeping influence over our reality. We will follow the ripples caused by Shane's divisive performance as the hapless Ashley, a teenager plunged into paranoia after learning about the mysterious Smiley killer. Just as the character Smiley spreads his killer meme virally through chatrooms and websites, the movie itself signifies the bleeding of the internet into everyday life, bringing chaos, violence and dread along with it.

Directed by TotallySketch creator Michael Gallagher, Smiley's movie debut leaves a lot to be desired, but it's constant YouTuber cameos and laughable inexperience make it fun to pick apart, which I absolutely will be.

In the decade since Smiley first logged on to torment viewers, the line between digital fantasy and reality has only grown blurrier. By peering behind the mask of this smiling slasher, we will confront truths about the horror-scape we all inhabit, where viral villains and ideas move stealthily from screens into our minds, emerging as madness, chaos and real-world violence. Smiley may wear the mask, but it is our online reality that lurks behind it.

The smiley character deserves a story rewrite by a different group. A much better quality and less cringey story.

Damn, Smiley was a lost memory we worked so hard to erase many years ago. Can't believe people remember this monstrosity.

Despite this horrible movie Smileyā€™s design is actually very creepy and sadly it has to be tied to this puke fest of a film

I gotta be honest, I don't think that I could sit through this movie because of how grating these characters are. Maybe because I wasn't around for YouTube's early days so I have no clue who 98% of these people are but goddamn the clips from this movie are brutal.

The girl who plays Roxy actually played in the movie ā€œThe Denā€. A really good horror movie based on a computer app like Omegle

As someone who devours YouTube drama Iā€™m living for how unproblematic CZ is trying to be when discussing these people šŸ˜‚

The scene debating about the internet becoming a higher consciousness feels like it was taken from another movie because it's actually interesting šŸ˜‚ Also, I'm worried about CZ and his mental health after watching this movie šŸ˜…

I'm glad Pinkstylist is getting a little recognition. He's a very skilled FX artist

You forgot the post credit scene that reveals that Ashley survived jumping out the window. I like to have this theory that not only did she survive, but she became the real Smiley seen at the end because she "sacrificed" herself.

The way you talk about this movie like itā€™s an actual movie and attempting to take it seriously is way beyond my comprehension but Iā€™m super impressed and idk how you do it.

Can we all please celebrate that the teacher is an amazing actor on Broadway. Great singing voice. And if I remember correctly, he sang young Hercules part in Disney Hercules.

What's scarier, Smiley or Shane Dawson's actual career?

I love you. As a content creator and a film professional you cut to to heart of what is objectively awful about this movie. Regardless of what you think of creators, or the creators of the time specifically, this movie is awful. Both as a creation of old-school YouTube creators and as a basic film. You put it so beautifully simply. Edit: I really have to learn to finish the whole video before commenting. I actually was introduced to Smiley by Pinkstylist. Who I found while researching stage and Fx makeup. Never watched the movie though. Too silly even for my dumb ass BTW I did it for the lulz. I did it for the lulz. I did it for the lulz.
