I agree with your take on AI art being a tool. Take into account the artist that won the 1st place spot for his AI generated piece. He, in total, generated 1000 images, picked 3 and then picked 1 of the 3. His time involved was learning his toolset, mastering what he could do with it, and then picking 1 result out of 1000 to win an accolade. In just that statement, it sounds like anyone using a creative tool, also factoring the transformative nature of using prompts YOU chose. If you incorporate 3 categories from ai to none and in-between into award shows, then that might solve the 1st place shenanigans. However, the fact remains that people at high levels using tools to create things-whether it be brush or keyword combos, are always gonna be seen as a skilled user. Even tool-assisted speedruns are still based off of knowledge of every frame, though played by AI they are. We have film vs digital on our hands at the moment, but if the end result is more expression for individuals wanting to create, then I don't think this "film" or "digital" in these metaphors is going anywhere.
