Today on AD, Margot Robbie takes us behind the scenes of ā€˜Barbieā€™ for an exclusive tour of the Barbie Dreamhouse. When tasked with bringing these iconic childhood toys to life on the big screen, Greta Gerwig enlisted the skills of production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer. Taking inspiration from Palm Springs midcentury modernism theyā€™ve created a whimsical fuchsia pink fantasy where slides replace stairs and thereā€™s not a wall in sightā€“when touring this impressive set itā€™s hard not to feel a rush of playful nostalgia as Greta states ā€œI wanted to capture what was so ridiculously fun about the Dreamhouses."

I really appreciate how fake just everything looks. Like with, Skipperā€™s treehouse literally looks like it was made out of plastic. there is so much fairness in everything, itā€™s hilarious and awesome

Such a shame studios have abandoned the behind the scenes aspect of movies. Stuff like this really makes you appreciate movies and movie making more

Iā€™m glad thereā€™s finally a director that respects how a little girl would think. She didnā€™t try to make the dream house sophisticated and really stayed true to the original eye catching designs that made girls like me love playing with Barbieā€™s

They couldn't hire someone better to be Barbie, she's perfect and really coordinates with the role of Barbie

I canā€™t believe they actually built it! They easily couldā€™ve gone with CGI. But they made an actual set. Thatā€™s dedication.

The fact they included Skipper and Midge in the movie speaks volumes that they care about not only the history of Barbie but her friends/sister too

I am almost embarrassed to admit that this made me tear me up a little bit šŸ„²I was OBSESSED with Barbie's as a little girl and had multiple sets of furniture for every conceivable room in a house (and multiple dream houses). I never really "played" but I built my own houses and furniture, hand sewed my own Barbie clothes, and created a Barbie universe. I grew up to be a Furniture Designer and dress maker....who would have thunk it šŸ˜‰

Just like disneyland, there should also be a Barbie land for people to visit.

I feel like this movie is the very definition of a passion project. You can tell how much Greta and the cast and crew want it to be authentic and grounded in everything Barbie is. They care about what they're doing and it shows. I'm so excited to see it!

Literally have tears of nostalgia, rolling down my face. Barbie was everyone's first friend, and Margot literally has captured her perfectly. Greta did such an amazing job. I AM IN LOVE.

I got tears in my eyes over the ā€œthis is the way kids play, so this is how we do itā€ mechanics. I am so freaking excited about this movie. If they rebuilt this set as a theme park attraction I would stack my pennies to get to go.

This set could be used as a barbie museum or something after they're done. Great stuff, i love the minimal amount of cgi and monumental amount of handcrafting and workmanship that went into this.

Can we please do something to preserve this set!? It truly is so gorgeous and itā€™s a masterpiece. It would be shame for the talent, blood, sweat and tears to go to waste.

As a child who always dreamed about Barbie house and never got one, this is just stunning. I wanna go live there.

This set looks ethereal because itā€™s completely handmade and painted, yes weā€™re technologically advanced but the authenticity and intricacy that comes with hand paint is unmatched. So many amazing artists being a part of this. This should be a case study for set/production design, fine art universities . Hats off to the entire team!!

Please make this into a thing, like touring through movie sets

I'm glad they didn't resort to green screens. You can tell a lot of effort was made on the sets of this film.
