This video explores the strange phenomenon known as the "call of the void" (or "high place phenomenon"), in which individuals report experiencing bizarre, uncharacteristic thoughts. Where do these thoughts come from? Why do people have them? What does it mean about the nature of our mind and what we control?

It's like an urge to go beyond limits, to want to do what should not be done. Somewhat calling for a freedom to take over.

I have experienced this. I thought I was just weird. Maybe I am weird, but it's comforting to know there are other people who have had strange feelings that their brain might make them jump from a high place.

I remember telling my friend about this, how there is nothing physically stopping me from leaping off a cliff. He had a similar experience, though his was there was nothing stopping him from PUSHING someone off a cliff. I suppose it is within the same vein, but let’s just say I’m not gonna visit the Grand Canyon with him anytime soon 😂

“A voice that came from us but is not ours” summarises everything. Awesome ! 👍🙏

I've always felt this since my childhood, I thought it was a "normal" feeling until I told my sister about this and she said she had never felt this. I remember my mom telling me she has also felt this before.

I´ve had awful fleeting thoughts about loved ones in the aftermath of their deaths. Thoughts such as I'm pleased they're dead or I hope they suffered. This greatly disturbed me at first, until I eventually realised that if I truly felt that way then I wouldn´t be upset by my thoughts. Although still not comfortable with them, I can now watch the bad thoughts arrive and then send them off on their way.

WOW. I've been experiencing this for decades. I never told anyone because I thought they were crazy thoughts! To be clear, I would never willingly jump from a high place but the sensation is so unsettling I have to walk away.

"A Voice that came from us, but isn't ours" That hits very deep for some reason.

This feeling can happen in other ways also. Like having achieved success in ones career and then one day on a lunch break, seemingly out of nowhere you just decide to walk away from your job. A momentary lapse of reason.

I like to just play out any intrusive thoughts in my head until it stops bothering me. I don't want to be afraid to think.

This phenomenon has actually so enhanced my fear of heights that it's become almost debilitating being anywhere that I may even think could be near a substantial edge or cliff....or roller coaster

Almost everyone that has survived a suicide attempt from jumping says they immediately regretted it while falling for that brief moment. Definitely take the time to listen to your friends, family, or even a complete stranger. It might be a small thing, but hopefully that can make them feel like people do care about them and their life does have worth.

I remember the first time this concept came around. i explained it to myself as a means to prove to yourself you can control your life.

Ive had a really personal experiences with this as a child. I was around 6/7 years old and whenever I would walk near my local canal (river) I would purposely not walk close to the edge because I felt scared that I would jump into the water. This happened every time and I was young so I didn't understand why I felt like I wanted to jump in but I do remember that the reason my brain wanted to convince me to jump in was to see what would happen next and somewhat allow me to be free even if I could potentially drown.

Better than urge to push someone. I experienced it once and it scares me. I felt like total psychopath and it was person I loved, my bf back then. I could never took anyone's life, where did that come from?

I remember the Ask a Mortician video about the 5 story art piece in New York that had become a very popular suicide spot. And someone in the comments mentioning they were an architecture student and trained not to create structures like this because they "create the call of the void." I kept wondering what that was, thanks for explaining!
