“I had a 200% chance of dying, and 5% chance of getting away”

On November 9th, 1986, 17 year old model Kate Moir accepts a ride from a seemingly nice couple, not knowing they’re actually the country’s most dangerous serial killers. Having murdered 4 girls already, Kate knows her time is running out, but she has a plan to escape captivity, that would result in her even being arrested herself by Australian officers.

How can cops not believe a near naked rape victim with restraint marks on her? What's wrong with them? They nearly missed the chance to break the biggest case of their careers?

I can't imagine anything worse than a victim not being believed.

Not only survives and escapes, but lives to change the parole system. What an amazing person.

"Stitch her up for false reporting" What excellent police work. Why do the job if you aren't prepared to actually do the job? It's terrifying.

So let me get this straight, young girls going missing and a detective immediately tries to dismiss a girl that’s just been taken and assaulted?? Wow!! Incompetent to the max.

As an Australian I'm disgusted at how they wanted to dismiss her. Perhaps lucky a female rookie was sent in. Also that they made her testify every 3 yrs! Wtf. This lady is a hero

At 3:57, a 17-year-old girl solves a serial killer case, hands it to the police on a silver platter, they decide to charge her with filing a false police report. That's your tax dollars hard at work. If there's one thing worse than a pair of serial killers, it's the police. (Edit: adjusted the timestamp)

Shame on the supervisor for demanding Kate be charged for "lying." A near naked, r@ped, hurt, teenage girl, with marks from being chained up isn't believed?! Thank goodness for the 2 officers who knew better and finally found such a monstrous couple. Kate is a true hero.

As a woman who was refused justice as a child, it haunts you forever. Especially when your attacker lives near you

I reported a rape once. The guy claimed “I didn’t do it” and that was that he clearly was innocent. Being a victim who wasn’t believed is horrid.

There’s nothing worse than the poor victims not being believed…

Murderers and kidnappers and repeat sex offenders should never be released. Let them out and they can do it again

How can a distressed child walk into a police station and not be believed. This is why people hate police. They are supposed to help.

It was heartbreaking to hear that not only did the police not believe her story but were ready to charge her without even going to check it out. It is an incomprehensible shame.

The way she's able to speak about it in such a matter of fact way is insane she's really strong

The fact that there was so much visible evidence already there and they were planning on charging kate is crazy

17 year old Kate instinctively did what I've heard experts in these sort of scenarios say increases your chance of survival. She cooperated and even feigned friendliness towards Catherine Birnie so the capter let her guard down. I think she's a highly intelligent person who survived something truly horrific happening to her.

Kate is absolutely a hero, a sadly overused term that truly fits in this case. The world needs so many more brave people like her these days, where victims are again so cruelly pushed aside and re-victimized in favor of criminals and personal profit and political power.

This was a terrifying time in Perth, we couldn’t believe it was happening. The youngest victim, Sue Candy, was my fathers friends daughter. It was horrible. David Birnie killed himself in prison. Catherine Birnie was considered for parole but eventually laws were changed and her file has been marked ‘never to be released’.
