Chris, you hit it on the nail! The reason that first guy kiss was "awkward" was because he (as you said) wasn't really your type (not head over heals attracted to him). When you really feel that electricity (someone whom you really love) the make-out kiss comes natural. There's no learning how that is needed. Trust me. If someone really like you, he/she shouldn't care HOW you kiss; it only matters if someone is stuck on only some physical pleasure while "making-out". All kissing is intimate and sooo close. That should be enough if someone actually cares.

I was super awkward the first time I made out with a guy. It was kind of a surprise and I was caught off guard. It didn’t go great.
