From Syrian Refugee To Rio Olympics: Yusra Mardini Shares True Story of Netflix Movie 'The Swimmers'

Yusra Mardini fled Syria as a refugee and made it all the way to the Rio 2016 Olympics and 2020 Tokyo Olympics representing the Olympic Refugee team. Now as her and her sister, Sara Mardini's story is turned into a new Netflix Movie, 'The Swimmers' Yusra shares her story on the latest episode of my podcast, Reign with Josh Smith. Listen to the full episode here: hyperurl.co/i4yxt0

In March 2011 when civil war broke out in Syria, Yusra Mardini had dreams of becoming an Olympic swimmer. But by August 2015 she and her sister, Sara had no choice but to undertake a journey which no one should have to.

Her perilous journey to Europe saw her first flying to Istanbul, then paying human traffickers to take them to Greece, and overland to Germany.

What happened in the sea en route to Greece is the stuff nightmares are made of, but a reality for so many. With 18 people on board, the dingy started to sink and for three hours Yusra and Sara had no option but to swim.

Not only did Yusra make it to Germany, after tracking down a new swimming coach, she represented the refugee team at the 2016 Rio Olympics and later the 2020 Tokyo Olympics:a true testament to human determination. It’s no wonder the sisters' story has now been made into one of the most moving films I have ever seen, 'The Swimmers' which is on Netflix now.

Yusra shares her story today, reflects on her relationship with her sister Sara and shares a powerful message to the policy makers in the UK who are managing the current refugee crisis. Yusra's story is a reminder - especially in our current political climate - that we are all human, and refugees need allyship not prejudice.

I hope you will be inspired by Yusra's story, just as much as I was and I hope you keep on listening and finding the power to Reign in your own lives. If this episode resonates with you please get in touch (follow me across social media @joshsmithhosts), I love hearing from you. Love, Josh xxx

I like how Yusra gave credit to her sister Sara because Sara really deserves a lot of praise for her humanitarian aid. She's even at risk of getting jailed for 15 years just for helping refugees. Both the sisters' stories are equally important and I love how Yusra emphasised that.

Yusra it was so profound what you said about your sister Sarah. Since I've learned about your story and Sarah's, not only do I feel blessed to have learned of your story to understand how strong people can be, but it also led me down a rabbit hole trying to uncover what Sarah went through. She IS a superhero, and I pray that they drop the charges. But you mentioning it in the way you did shows how mature and self-aware you are. :)

This is a great, insparitional ,example story of determination ,However , Here in my country Libya ,we actually have so many Syrians come over for the last 10 years although we never treated them unfairly on the contrary we were so welcoming and supportive to them and yes i totally agree not all refugees are good and vice versa .

This is an inspiring story, but It should not exist, it's very sad in many ways. These sisters are winners in a situation that only creates loss, I don't remember watching a movie as emotional as this one in many years...

Everyone should watch this story. Most “entitled” people around the world, either thru fear or misinformation would benefit from watching. When one’s life is turned upside down, and the bullets start flying, is it any wonder that they run? Don’t we all want to live? I grew up learning about immigration and Ellis Island being close to it by living in NY. When did many of our country’s citizens turn against allowing refugees or immigrants to come into our country. To even imagine building a wall to keep them out. Shame on trump. Shame on the Republicans that push for building this wall!

Does it cut by the end? I feel like she still had something to say, about her mom maybe?
