For more information on Dr. Wong or #YaleMedicine, visit: www.yalemedicine.org/specialists/abby-wong.

Abby Wong, MD, is a general surgeon who cares for patients with conditions such as appendicitis, cholecystitis (inflammation of the gall bladder), or small bowel obstruction, as well as patients in the hospital intensive care unit (ICU). She performs open, laparoscopic, and robotic surgeries, often depending on patient preferences and shared decision-making with patients. An experience with health inequity when she was younger inspired Dr. Wong to become a surgeon. “I had the opportunity to travel to some fairly remote locations, and I had a travelling companion who almost died of appendicitis because of our geographic location,” she says. “That health inequity inspired me to take a closer look at the global shortage of surgeons.” She became interested in the ICU during a research year in sub-Saharan Africa, where she worked in a surgical ICU and decided to pursue an ICU fellowship. “I enjoy the team approach that the ICU requires—providers across multiple specialties working in tandem to advance a patient's care,” she says. Dr. Wong dedicates her time to providing clinical care at Yale New Haven Hospital and Lawrence + Memorial in New London, Connecticut, where she especially appreciates the opportunity to build relationships with patients in the community. “I have always loved the mission of community hospitals, where I can live and work within my own community to provide surgical services,” she says.
