I had just bought my own small business from a friend around the time this song came out. I would start work at 3 a.m., turn the radio on and make hundreds of sandwiches until about 7 a.m. in a kitchen I rented space from, and then deliver them to about 20 or so accounts until around noon. Usually it was just me working alone. Although the business did ok, during those first 6 months I was so lonely and sad, I just remember getting home each day and so often crying under the apple tree in my backyard, with this song playing in my head. It's a very powerful song.
Yes, things got better. And I still listen to and love this song.
