New! Longest Ruling National Leaders 1939 - 2024
Jump to Connections

Here's a timeline of the longest-serving national leaders from 1939 to 2024.

Methodology: Each year counts if a person held power for at least one calendar day during that year. The ruling leader is the highest-ranked political figure in a country as mandated by the constitution or, in practice, the most powerful person in the state, regardless of official title (e.g., the Putin-Medvedev case). Royal monarchies with absolute power are not included.

Bar Colors: Western countries (Blue), African countries (Black), Asian countries (Yellow), Latin American countries (Green), Soviet Union and its former republics (Red).

Your feedback is always welcome. Got topic suggestions? Drop me a message!

A lot of questions, I have to address Vladimir Putin's case here. 1. He was the acting president in 1999 before being elected in 2000. 2. The counting methodology is as follows: serving at least one day during any calendar year is counted as one year. 3. The ruling leader is the highest-ranked political figure in a country as mandated by the constitution or, in practice, the most powerful person in the state, regardless of official title (e.g., the Putin-Medvedev terms).

Why do the years count down when they are out of power? Doesn't make sense to me.

António Oliveira de Salazar, of Portugal, is missing from this list. He was the de-facto ruler between 1932 and 1968, during the portuguese dictatorship period.

You have reached the limit of this visualization format. It makes no sense for the years to decrease and there is no way to compare the total length of service if they drop off the chart the second they lose power or die.

Interesting thought that the U.S. never made the list after Roosevelt because term limits were imposed.

Thanks for the video. But it looks like you posted the wrong photo for Lee Kuan Yew (Singapore), what appears is a photo of Suharto (Indonesia).
