My girlfriend cried in the cinema at this scene, and hugged me tightly during it, saying after “What If that happens to us”. 8 years later this month, our lives took us in separate directions after trauma caused us to become amicable passing ships. I hope I’ll see her again one day and we share a moment like from this film.

A boss played by JK Simmons being nice to the protaganists is easily the most unbelievable part of this scene lmao

This was the first film I cried at in over twenty years. This scene specifically. As you get older and you think about your past lives, you’ll understand.

Only a person sick to the core can direct an ending as brutal as this. Still not over this scene

This is one.of the most magical endings I've seen all the emotion just bursts on screen in the last 10 minutes Damian chazelle knows how to end a film so perfectly

Even though this ending is bittersweet, and I’m sure we all have at least one person we often wonder about, I think this does illustrate how they were the right people for each other at that point in time. They both pushed and encouraged each other to follow their dreams and not give up. In the end, their story feels more to me as a catalyst that allowed them to sustain their passion for their dreams, and achieve great heights. They could have never done it without the other. This is what makes their bond so powerful and in my opinion, less of a romantic one. It speaks more to a kind of kindred spirit connection. I love this movie.

When this originally came out I thought the ending was too sappy, now I understand the truly amazing it is, showing a ‘what could have been’ scenario but then cutting back to reality as the viewer is to decide what would have been better as in both events they ended up happy.

Sometimes we need to let go of someone or something in order to achieve happiness. This movie had so many life lessons not only about love but about your passion and dreams and choosing whether you follow it or sacrifice it for another.

Interesting that in the imagined "what if" life, Seb and Mia are so affectionate. Very telling on how she loved him compared to her husband. I think it's a realistic depiction of what happens when you don't end up with the love of your life. You can love another but it won't be the same.

How did Ryan Gosling not win an oscar for this, or for any movie actually.

I finally understood the ending : It's from Mia's perspective as she dreams of what could have been, ignoring all the obstacles and seeing everything through rose tinted glasses (like the first encounter or her play, why is it all of the sudden full with people?). Everything works out for her, she accomplished her dream together with her dream love, but then they reach the present, and she realizes, she would sit in the Van Beek with Seb, but he would not be playing nor owning the place meaning he never furfilled his dream. Life ain't like the movies where everything works put, you sacrifice a lot furfilling your dreams. They could not furfill their dreams without each other, but neither with one another.

i feel like everyone was waiting for a stereotypical moment where she turns are runs to kiss him or something but we ended up with something better, that will emotionally haunt us for days because that's the best exchange of emotions we have and will ever see. i liked how we didn't experience their love but them being happy and as someone else has stated, proud of eachother. this is the love we need to see, the love you feel when your lover accomplishes something and you feel equally as satisfied with that accomplishment if this even makes sense at all...

I always go back to this video at least once a month, whenever I feel like having a good cry. This whole 9 mins video is perfect. It's shattering, it gives you a whole comfort & dream before the final smiling scenes. Everything is wrapped so perfectly.

For me, the ending is so powerful because, he pushed her to fulfill her dreams, and so did she. Neither one of them held the other back. They both wanted the absolute best for each other no matter the cost to their personal happiness. When they were speaking by the Observatory in the daylight, he knew when she got the part she would be traveling and successful and he didn't want to hold her back. If Seb had given up the band and traveled with Mia as she began her fame, he would never have been able to open Seb's from his own hard work. If Mia gave up on her dreams (which Seb wouldn't have let her do), she would never have fulfilled her own dream either which would have led to unhappiness. The ending is so powerful because Mia and Seb in the crowd = Mia with her success but Seb without his dream of Jazz club. And Mia with her husband = Seb with his dream of a club. Yes, you could argue that they didn't get their love in the end with each other, but if either sacrificed their goals, then their partnership long term probably wouldn't have worked considering how ambitious both of them were. An absolutely beautiful timeless movie that I will never grow bored of. The first time I saw it was in a theatre in Edinburgh and I cried at how beautiful this film is. Absolute classic.
