The R46 is the Rodney Dangerfield of subway cars. It's been referred to as problem-plagued, a dinosaur, and a clunker. I've been a fan of the R46 since I was a child and that made me very angry. The R46 is the greatest NYC Subway car ever built. It has a smooth ride, comfortable transverse seats, an aesthetically pleasing interior, and the coolest propulsion noise. The R46 was meant to give subway riders the comfortable experience of riding a commuter railroad train.

Unfortunately, just like every human being eventually leaves the planet Earth after a finite amount of years, subway cars don't last forever. The R46 is in the twilight of its illustrious career. It's being replaced by the R211. Although the R211 is quite impressive, it couldn't hold a candle to the R46. The R46 will eventually end up in a scrapyard (that will be one of the saddest days of my life). Hopefully, some of them are preserved for Transit Museum fan trips.
