Now, delayed, over budget and more controversial than ever, HS2 ambitions have hit the rails. Rishi Sunak has confirmed that construction of the HS2 leg between Birmingham and Manchester was no longer going ahead. Speaking at the Conservative party conference, he added that 'every single penny' of the £36bn allocated for the high-speed rail branch would be invested in other transport projects. Since Labour announced plans for a north-south high-speed rail network, the project has been beset by problems.

So instead of continuing with the already completed work on phase 2a of HS2 and the environmental impact that entailed. Which would have at least given us a rail link from Crewe to London. They have decided to throw all of that money invested, in the bin. leaving us with a small taste of modern infrastructure. I didn't think the tories could be any more incompetent, but they did it!

This means more roads, and more domestic flying, this is pretty terrible for the UK.

I think HS2 is the greatest possible metaphor for the decay and utter decline of United Kingdom

Average cost of HS2 phase I : 238mil USD/km (at least) Average cost of the Indonesian High speed rail : 53mil USD/km Average cost of Chinese high speed rail : 16-21mil USD/km Average cost of Japanese high speed rail : 23mil USD/km Average cost of French TGV : 26mil Euro/km Average cost of Italian high speed rail: 27-67mil USD/km Conclusion HS2 totally incompetent as a nation in managing a medium size rail project and a rolling calamity in controlling costs and project management.

Fun Fact: Before getting scrapped last week, HS2 Manchester was set to be the fastest man-made object to move from Manchester to London since Noel Gallagher back in the 90s.

The people criticising this seem to be the same people who opposed it. Whatever you think about it it’s concerning that we can’t build anything without costs spiralling out of control.

How pathetically inadequate is Britain, can't deliver anything anymore, without budgets costing 4 times original cost. The companies involved obviously are only interested I the Extra works for over inflated priced work. They're ALL AT IT. Has anybody heard of any large project being done on time and under budget 😂😂😂

He spent all the monies on his mates so nothing left for the actual countries infrastructure

Basically, they are saying “We will (not) reinvest that 36 billion pound in Northern infrastructure”. No one would hold us accountable anyway.

Tory promises! Do you honestly expect promised delivery?

Such a shame HS2 would have made lunch in Paris and home in the same day for Mancunians.

Absolutely incompetence they make wild claims that China is spending more on their HS rail system. Yes China is spending more, but its built 42000km so far, with 70000km when completed. The cost of HS2 so far is £45million/KM. China's system which very heavy on bridges and tunnels is just £12million/km. Let's ask China to build HS2 after all they've just completed one on Java for Indonesia. Cutting a journey time 3.5 hours to just 40 minutes.

So as a former transport Minister what exactly was Grant Shapps doing to keep the costs from rocketing?

All I know is that if Brunel or Stephenson were building HS2 it would be done already.

Austerity, austerity, austerity. No other ideas from this lot. Our rail infrastructure is a complete joke and so are the Tories.

System will not let me answer Thomas Sullmann's comment. Here it is: So we haven't had a rail line between Manchester and London for over 150 years then have we???

Just goes to show that trying to reason with NIMBYs indefinitely will always leave you with spiraling costs or poor results.
