This song was written for one of Billieās friends, who unfortunately got into a car accident. The bridge at 2:15 (of song time, not video time) really captured the intensity and emotion felt when going through the scenarios of what COULD have happened if anything was done differently. Her voice is so haunting and just ethereal and was perfect for this song. Nobody close to me has personally been in a car accident, but it is something I have always feared in the back of my mind. I, although this is pessimistic and dark, have always thought about things like accidents happening and what other things could happen to those I love and I am always cautious about this stuff. This song is my all-time favorite and made me cry the first couple times listening. š

I haven't seen your channel before today. What an appreciative and insightful review! I am a 68 yr. old Billie fan who went to my first concert in over 40 yrs to hear/enjoy her music. Billie's voice is not Ariana's, Adele's, Miley's or like your shirt JANIS JOPLIN [who in my view is absolutely awesome as a singer/artist/MUSE] but she is gifted nevertheless and there's an authenticity and emotive connection she makes in it - I saw her in St. Paul, MN (March 15) and she sang "No Time to Die" and it moved me to tears - I appreciate that you are one Vocal Coach/Reactor who rises above PERFECTIONISM and the NEED to be Right and Critical and hears and looks for the gift in the music and the artist. I have a feeling that you give all those you listen to a fair and respectful listen, which in itself, is a gift. Thanks! P.S. There are other vocal coaches - as you know - who are also respectful and appreciative in their listening/reviewing; I prefer that approach.

I'm 40, I grew up hearing the legends of the past, after 10/20 years of waiting for such a true artist, Billie arrived and I immediately fell in love with her. I follow her from her EP, when I hear her unique vocal + her attitude in the songs when she was only 13-15 years old + the unique production .. I saw an HUGE creative potential and I was rightā¦ I delete all the pop crap artists I have heard in recent years and for me it cannot be compared. She is art, she is what music especially pop music in this world exists for, she goes beyond just singing, she excites in every single word. If God existed, I'd say he's speaking through Billie. What Billie has vocally is a GIFT. Her singing then totally demonstrates her person, almost every thought of her, her emotion. I HAVE NEVER HEARD anyone do this. She has vocally taken over the singers of the 20-50s and created something new, I don't know how describe it. It's like her soft voice is a bridge between what she feels and what she wants you to feel, it's like she transfers everything about herself into you. The legends of the past who took you vocally as āthe voiceā Whitney Houston etc wonderful, amazing, but you were mostly in love only with their voice, not with the emotion of the song.. Billie completely lowered everything to tell you "i'm here, I don't want you to focus on my huge voice , but about me and what I want you to know and feel with this song i wrote" she was able to vocally create a middle ground between song and poetry. Incredible. She is on another level for me as an artist. There is no one like Billie and any artist who tries now to sing like her can't, it's something spiritual that you hear in her through her voice even with her music video that is inexplicable. She went beyond singing, it's as if she had elevated herself creating another sense with which she transmits with us. It's something you don't see, you can't describe it, but you can feel as soon as she takes a note. Billie is special. Music has always been a spiritual gift, it has always been said that āit's what God has given usā, what makes you feel is unique in the world, only music can and Billie is the artist who reminds you what it's for and why exist music. After so many years of losing the true meaning of music especially art, Billie has arrived. A gift for us. She must be protected at all costs, she reminds me a lot of MJ for her soul, her empathy, sympathy and love that she always has for everyone, and her rebel badass charismatic soul like Madonna.. this āBillie Eilish phenomenonā is a package of art, music, hope, love, empathy .. human - divine beauty on earth.

this song hits you like a ton of bricks, and when the Bridge kicks in you feel like someone is hammering in a nail into youre entire being with each line, upping that intensity.
when i hear her breaths and exhales it sounds to me like shes on the verge of a quiver , holding tears back, and that tension your breath takes in those moments is expelled almost as an unconscious nervous energy. it hits so hard, and she executes it perfectly

When I listened to the 30th for the first time I started crying in the second chorus when the piano starts playing eventhough I could not really comprehend all the lyrics at this time. On 2nd/3rd listen the bridge sent me into a panic attack which was extremely scary as I had not had one for more than 5 years. Today I can really appreciate it, it's a masterpiece.

Enjoyed your analysis. I think on the bridge where it's so big, they edited out her breathing for a more intense effect. There is a video on YouTube where she and Finneas talk about "comping" or editing different takes together. Seems like that's what they did here. As always, I could be wrong. Proof will be whenever she does this live. Doesn't matter to me either way. I really love the song.

Have you ever checked out Aurora? Sheās the most profound emotional vocalist and lyricist ever. Billie Eilish actually cites her as one of her major inspirations early in her career. Check out Auroraās live performance of Through the Eyes of a Child live at Nidarosdomen. It just rips your guts out in the best way. Iād love to hear your analysis of it.

First thing I noticed was how you could hear Billie take breathes between lines and even words. And then thereās the bridge, which really does express the rise of panic at the realization of what happened and what could have happened.
