Pet Shop Boys’ “Suburbia” (1986) was inspired by the 1984 motion picture of the same name, directed by Penelope Spheeris. The movie is about young people growing up in the LA suburbs, amid abuse and decay. Miss Spheeris is quite rock and roll : she made the landmark documentary “The Decline of Western Civilization” (1981), which chronicles the LA punk scene. She also created the film “Wayne’s World” (1992).
“Suburbia” was the fifth and final single from the Pet Shop Boys debut album, “Please” (1986).
The video, helmed by Eric Watson, was shot in both Los Angeles and London.
Interestingly, club play had a lot to do with the English group’s success. Unlike rock bands that built their fanbase by touring, the synth-pop duo stayed off the road as much as possible. 💙🎵💜🎬💚

A lot of 80s synth sounded so tinny and cheap. The Pet Shop Boys art sounds so rich, full-bodied and sophisticated. Their sound never dates. I hope they get a Kate Bush-style resurgence.
