A few weeks ago on RE, we went on a journey through the Italian railway system, making a comprehensive overview and discussing its development from a historical perspective, its current organization, key players and market segments, and of course, the performance of both, the freight and passenger transport carriers.

In the previous video, we discussed Italy's remarkable high-speed railway segment, whose success can be attributed to various factors, but one often neglected is the country's geographical layout, ie. the existence of a north-south axis extending from the Alps into the Mediterranean Sea, with the majority of the country's most populous cities situated along this axis.

In that video, we continued the Italian story, by delving deeper into the explanation of the current Italian HSR network, exploring the lines currently under construction, and presenting fascinating facts and figures about the Italian HSR market.

Now, in this video, we are concluding the story of Italian railways, and taking a closer look at the features of incredible Italian high-speed trains and services.

Compared to our usual videos of this kind, this one is slightly different, as, instead of focusing on the development and evolution of HSR trains over time, we explored the train sets within the defined services offered by two famous Italian HSR operators: Trenitalia and Italo.

Etr 700 now is freccia rossa, actually freccia argento and freccia bianca services are going to be discontinued, because the classic service regionale / regionale veloce is fast enough and sometimes freccia argento was faster than freccia rossa due to stops so it was a bit confusing

ETR1000 is a very common incorrect designation. It is the ETR400 (ANSFISA rules this, AFAIK), Frecciarossa 1000 is a Trenitalia brand. As said before, calling it Frecciarossa 400 would have suggested something less than pre existing ETR 500.

Awesome video, just a few annotations: the ETR 485s are all either been sold to Greece or repurposed on the Frecciabianca service, while all ETR 700 are all rebranded as Frecciarossa. Frecciabianca is about to be discontinued and only operates in very few cities on two lines, both originating from Rome and reaching Ravenna or Genova (then splits reaching Turin or Milan). Frecciargento on the other hand reaches more destinations especially in the south on the Adriatic line reaching Apulia and Calabria (which are also serviced by Frecciarossa during holidays and summer).

What a coincidence, you and RMTransit made a video on Italian high speed rail on the same day. Nice.

As other people mentioned in the comments, the section of this video dedicated to Trenitalia isn't up to date: it's not really the creator's fault, Trenitalia happens to be in the process of reviewing its brandings and rolling stock assignments, a process that is supposed to leave Frecciarossa as their only brand for free-market high-speed services, interrupting a process of growing ambiguity. An incorrect information that no one else has yet highlighted is about the ETR 470. Cisalpino was a joint venture between the Italian and Swiss railways: when it was dissolved in 2009, 5 ETR 485 became owned by Trenitalia and 4 by SBB. SBB always struggled to mantain theirs, probably because their workshops weren't used to that kind of rolling stock, and decommissioned them in 2015, as soon as they had enough ETR 610 to replace them. Trenitalia also replaced them with their new ETR 610 a few years later, but started using them on Frecciabianca services from Rome to Calabria. In 2020 they decided to refurbrish and transfer all of their 5 ETR 470 to TrainOSE.

I recognised some clips of my dear friend @AdriaticTrainspotting when you start talking about the Etr 460 from the minute 8:29 to 8:45, and from 11:35 to 12:19, you’ve the authorisation to use them or not?

Great video, I wanted to add that some of the etr 600s and 700s are also made into frecciarossa trains to reach more destinations.

For now all the ETR470 are in Greece and ETR463/485 are in Italy. Trenitalia removed ETR463 tilting mechanics and they are going to do the same with ETR485 soon or later ...

Thanks for the vid. Great explanation. I really enjoyed my experience of travelling on the Frecciarossa a few years ago. I'd only really been on one train that travelled at that speed before then and that was the Eurostar. Keep up the good work guys👍

Sadly, "FrecciaBianca" trains are being repainted as IC Sun Livery (The InterCity italian operator) And a few E414s, E402Bs and some coaches are still remaining in FB livery.

Best thing about the etr 1000 is that the cabin is pressurised like on airplanes, so you feel absolutely nothing when goes through tunnels

The video, although good, does not focus on the rivalary, which its title leads one to believe. Italian trains have come a long way. I took the Frecciarossa and Frecciargento in 2022, and was very pleased with the service. One improvement I would suggest is WiFi on board, though. It was needlessly complicated.
