Zach Bryan - Summertime's Close

I’ve had cold and humid mornings on city streets and back porches
But I ain’t never breathed a breath as fresh as you
And I’ve seen children playin on the coastline
Under the white line atop the blue tides
But I aint ever been baptized in water as cool as you

And the law don’t never come back here
And I reckon they don’t try
I just put some beer on ice
Let’s just dance for a moment or two

Cuz you’re the fire of Carolina and Oklahoma too
The stars in St. Louis ain’t burning as bright as you
You’re the waves crashing down on the eastern coast
When the day’s cooling off and the summertimes close
I lost faith in the world a long time ago

We’d always ride those backroads
Back when you got sick
Roll the windows down
Just for the hell of it
You always acted baptized
Every time we hit the coast
Bandana tanline on your forehead
So the tourists didn’t know

Cuz you’re the fire of Carolina and Oklahoma too
The stars in St. Louis ain’t burning as bright as you
You’re the waves crashing down on the eastern coast
When the day’s cooling off and the summertimes close
I lost faith in the world a long time ago
My blood rush to the heart you were my last hope

And the law don’t never come back here
And I reckon they don’t try
I just put some beer on ice
And tonight I’m dancing for two

Well, I waited until now to add my bit, this song is almost too personal and I will never have another experience as I did Aug 2023 when I heard this song for the first time. I think the weight of a million stones simultaneously lifted and dropped on my chest. It is something, a tie in space and time to this amazing young artist Zac, he totally reminds me of something I remember Bob Dylan saying... lyrics and music exist in this collective space, and some people are able to tap into that world... Zac is so clearly one of those people. But this song for me is a dagger and also a blessing. Aug of 2015 my daughter showed her first symptoms of leukemia, the summertime was closing so when summertime closes for me every year when the weather transforms to fall and the leaves start shedding, it is hard for my psychic. When the days cool off... the craziest thing tho is the second verse the baptism by the coast, different coast than Zacs but the west. There is this curtain when you live near the ocean, when you hit that curtain you know your almost home and that was for my family the same. Bodega Bay was our baptism, the air cools and that smell, and I could see the weight go off my daughters face, off her soul... and even if it was just for a week, that big beautiful ocean was safety, a break from the pain, and home. We used to take the back roads to bet the tourists, like Meyers Grade after Jenner or the whole of Hwy 1 from Marin. Sometimes the lines of cars on hwy 1 after Jenner is just too much so we would drive the back roads and enjoy the beauty and serenity that is rural northern ca. And the most profound thing to me that I can’t even write without crying, I used to roll the windows all the way down, we all would and she would sing her heart out or I would put her baby dolls out the window and make them dance in the wind. Cold or not, she loved singing out the window and laughing as I danced her baby dolls in the cool coast air. She is my fire of California and Manchester too, the stars will never out shine her, she is my last hope. My blood rushed to my heart that day we found out how sick she was, I remember I was in Ukiah at the ER, I went into the bathroom when the doctor came back to tell me and I crumbled. There is a terror so grand in that kind of news. My world fell apart when she got sick, I still don’t know if it has really come back together. Thankfully she is great now, you would never know her horrific experience as a five year old. Also, another beautiful coincidence on her birthday Aug 17, this last year Zac played in Idaho, her grandpa lives in Idaho, but more importantly he quoted this song that day, on her birthday...’the law don’t ever come back here’ it’s funny too she was asking me before this album which song reminded me of her and I never had one, bit’s and pieces of songs... and that night when I first heard this... there is no way to describe the feeling. I will never have it happen again I am sure of that. I know Zac won’t see this, but he already knows. What he has given us all in a broken and sad world, Hope.

He's pure country, with some Dylan and I even get a hint Billy Joel. He's not biting i can hear the influence, respect.
