Google's earthquake warning system failed to get to many Turkish residents before February's deadly tremor, a BBC investigation has found.

Google said its alert system can give users up to a minute's notice on their phones before an earthquake hits.

It said its alert was sent to millions before the first, biggest quake.

However, the BBC visited three cities in the earthquake zone, speaking to hundreds of people, and didn't find anyone who had received a warning.

Whether is works properly or not, it’s not like it’s Google’s fault all those people died. It’s whoever built those shoddy buildings.

I had received an alert once in the past, the only thing is I received it 2 minutes AFTER the earthquake. Like, literally evacuating the building and getting a notification that an earthquake is about to happen.

If someone is to blame for the unpreparedness, it's the Turkish government and not Google in the first place.

We get these alerts in Greece, however, it usually goes off at the time of the earthquake so no real warning

Not exactly sure why Google is responsible for earthquake warnings. This sounds just like some kind of extra mobile function. It's not like they got a request to develop sth like that.

Bruh what kind of news is this are you trying to blame it on Google ? We all know these applications aren’t perfect people shouldn’t rely on it too much…

Google is just Google, not God. It cannot detect every circumstance with such perfection..

When did it become Google’s responsibility?

I have experienced delays taking many minutes before receiving SMS messages, Google Chat messages or online WhatsApp calls multiple times on multiple different Android devices with different Android software. If some Android devices are unable to notify the user about an online WhatsApp call in due time, I am unsure why should one expect that they would deliver other online alerts on time.

Eyes looking to the side. Inappropriate smile. "I'm as sure as I can be." Yeah, he definitely knows it didn't work right.

Another glaring example of what happens when states rely on the privatization of social services. Sad.

It's pathetic to try to blame a company who's trying to save lives with a FREE warning service. No one mentioned the companies who built those flimsy buildings.

Timely alerts can save lives during natural disasters, and it's crucial for such systems to be effective and accessible to the public. While Google claims to have sent alerts to millions, the fact that no one in the visited cities received a warning raises concerns about the system's reliability. Improving and enhancing these warning systems should be a priority,
