The audacity to make a nearly 15 minute long song in 1979 in a genre that basically no one knew about, and then to have it be a huge hit is just amazing

Legend. First heard this in the skating rink as a teen in 1979, could NOT sit down when this was playing. Now I'm 57 and just shared it on Facebook in honor of the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop, and I jumped up and started dancing. Timeless good jams.

I'm 63 years old and was working in a music store in 1979. As soon as we got the 'albums' in they sold out. A classic, never gets old.

This was one of the first raps and birth of hip hop. These guys open the doors and there wouldn't be rappers in 2023 if it wasn't for the sugar hill gang.Nothing but respect to them.

And it was recorded in a single take, no overdubbing, no vocoders, no over the top engineering/producing...classic !

I remember back in 1979 when my cool aunt would babysit at least 6 or 8 of us(me,my siblings and some cousins)on a Friday night. And we all knew when she played her Sugarhill gang album on the record player that it was going to be a blast. And it truly always was. Those were the good old days. Man, what I wouldn’t give to go back there sometimes.
