Ringo Starr is probably the most influential drummer of all time, and his clever but quirky drum parts have been the soundtrack to several generations of music lovers. Gregg Bissonnette is the drummer Ringo himself chose to play in his All Starr Band - Gregg himself has played with many legends, but at his heart, he is one of the biggest Beatles fans in the world. Today on The Drum Department, Gregg will share some of the stories, insight, and drumming genius he learned from working with Ringo for over 20 years.

I got the privilege of hanging out with Gregg for a day when I was a freshman in college. He was at our school for a day of percussion to do a clinic and play with the jazz band. While everyone else was toiling away setting up marimbas and vibraphones, I somehow was the one who got to pal around with Gregg. We went to a local hardware store together to get a wing nut for his cymbal case. He was (is) so incredibly kind, humble, and was just a genuine joy to be around. Not to mention being an absolutely phenomenal musician!! I'll never forget that day and I always tune in to the Drumeo videos when he's featured. Thanks guys for this amazing content!

In 1964, Ringo bought a Ludwig Oyster Black " Super Classic " set. This was the set he would use for the bulk of his Beatles career.

I used to work for a music store in Boston that has since gone out of business. Gregg did many drum clinics at the store and couldn't have been nicer, always staying til well after the end to talk with drummers. That always impressed me.

Gregg is one of my favorite drummers. He is a working man's drummer that can play numerous styles and able to adapt to whatever the artist wants. He reminds me of drummers like Hal Blaine, who can play with any type of musician and is always in demand.
