i know this song was about his old friend and him drifting ways as they grow older but i'm still choosing to believe that this song is about missing the parts of who he was when he was younger and him evolving into this new person he dislikes. he sees that it's hurting and destroying him but he chooses to stay in that form and so nothing is left but to reminisce of who he was.
i'm sure we're scared of changing and sometimes, we never expect to be the person we are today. even i, sometimes, am afraid of what i became.

Omg just realized that both of the characters are Ruel. That adds a whole other dimension to the meaning of this song.
Like, at first i looked on the surface and thought maybe this is about an old friend or smthn. Then there was this revelation and now i think maybe this song is actually about himself; about ourselves. (Idk if i make sense but) It's like he's telling how a lot of times we grow up to become someone completely different than our younger selves; Someone who might not recognize with or refuse to recognize with (our) childhood.
