Today we're playing a 400-year-old piece on both the lute (the instrument for which it was written) and the classical guitar. Let's compare, contrast and appreciate each version. The piece: John Dowland's Lachrimae Pavan from 1595.

Of course he'd say he's less experienced with the lute to cover his secret vampire status. He obviously had played it since its conception, with his experience with guitars being less than the lute. :)

Huge props to John Dowland for writing a hit back in 1595 that's still popular over four and a quarter centuries later.

The lute sounds like I've walked into a medieval Inn. The guitar sounds like I'm drinking my sorrows away in a dark corner in said medieval Inn.

For me there's no contest: my ears are the winners

For me, it’s like comparing one’s love for your mother and one’s love for your wife. Both are beautiful. Great presentation.

This piece gives me those weepy Renaissance blues. Tears in my wine goblet.

Both the guitar and lute should be appreciated for their own qualities. What a beautifully prepared lesson, Brandon! 🌞

The lute makes me feel that I have lived before this life I love it.

Just when i almost make a decision on an instrument i get introduced to another. I always was interested in a lute but was aiming for a parlor guitar.

Those pieces sound beautiful on the lute.

Lute sounded like a conversation during the day. The guitar sounded like a conversation in the late evening.

The lute version sounds fuller, but that is ofcourse due to it's multitude of strings. Absolutely mesmerizing.

Decades ago, I also tried to arrange that particular Dowland Lachrimae for guitar.

Guitar sounds warmer indeed, sounded more satisfying on itself

This particular piece could have sounded warmer on the classical guitar, but i was charmed by the bright, dry sound of the lute.

I wonder how a lute/guitar duet of this song would sound like...

It made me think about a comparison between the harpsichord and piano
